The Brave New Breakthrough of Online Learning | Edutopia

The Brave New Breakthrough of Online Learning | Edutopia | On Education Technology | Scoop.it
“Discover how K-12 students and teachers from across the country are using virtual technology to create enhancements to their learning experiences and new success in their lives.”...
Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Kevin McWain's insight:
There is more to online learning, however, than just upticks in student achievement. It is also paying dividends in two key areas that challenge school administrators everywhere:It's proving to be a viable, low-cost strategy that could substantially help overcome the huge, recession-driven deficits in education budgets across the country. With more than a third of all K-12 educators leaving the profession due to layoffs or retirement over the next few years, online learning is emerging as the best direct solution for providing many urban and rural children with the instruction they need in already teacher-thin subjects such as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and world languages.

A lecture might be the easiest way for information to be delivered, but it is just that - delivery. In order for students to make sense of the information, they must do something with it then and there. This study is about university courses, but it could easily apply to high school as well.

Left to Their Own Smart Devices | On Education Technology | Scoop.it
Educational institutions should enter the mobile age and embrace the opportunity to be more effective, efficient, and cost sensitive than ever before. The challenge, like with any disruption, is to rethink the system design and utilize new concepts, such as multi-persona, that align with this new age of mobility. Exciting times are ahead for educators.

Kevin McWain's comment, April 10, 2014 8:49 AM
There are a couple aspects of this post that stick out. The idea that teachers are actively seeking their own professional development is a topic that I have been learning and preaching about recently. I am also thankful for the improvements in the many podcasting applications mentioned here. While I think that there is a lot of excellent content out there, teachers don't need to recreate the wheel to get started with podcasting/flipping in their own classrooms. In the long run, in is important to extend the access to education to all students from every classroom. These tools are helpful.

How technology enables bLearning

How technology enables bLearning | On Education Technology | Scoop.it
We wanted to transition from traditional education to a flexible, 21st century model, and we were determined to support our schools in any way we could," Song says. So far, the district has invested in new networking equipment, Wi-Fi and about 5,000 Acer, HP and SamsungChromebooks. Innovative districts such as MUSD are recognizing that they can no longer take a business-as-usual approach to instruction. Today's students — and, increasingly, teachers — are tech-savvy, and they want an interactive and engaging classroom experience. To adapt, these districts are investing in more technology and embracing new instructional models. IT leaders from these districts say it's important to get technology into the hands of every child and to extend the classroom beyond the school day, so they're focusing their limited budgets on mobile devices, cloud applications and other online educational content. They're also building out their wireless infrastructures to support all of these new efforts.
Via Edumorfosis, Teaching, Learning & Developing with Technology, Kevin McWain
Kevin McWain's insight:
The district administrators started with a great, yet simple, question about the future and then they let the principals and the teachers develop their own plans! I love it. A transformed educational system will get to the point where the students participate in developing their own plans for learning. If you could design a school of the future, what would it look like?
