I selected this piece was written by Chris Sietsema for convinceandconvert blog because the post plus the infographic lays out a very clear and concise plan to create your content marketing strategy.

 

**Whether you're creating or curating content, this is something I think is very useful. This is why I rescooped this from my content marketing, social media and beyond  topic.

 

Here are a few highlights from the article:

 

He compares selecting and producing content to what he calls "bricks" and "feathers".

 

Bricks are referred to as research reports

 

**are larger content productions such as research reports, events, white papers        .

    video series, mobile apps, etc

 

**have the potential to make a larger splash when executed and promoted correctly.

 

Feathers are comprised of simple text and photo content published via popular social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Pinterest, etc.

 

**Less intensive than bricks from a production budget standpoint, feathers are created consistently to maintain an ongoing stream of communication between a brand and its audience.


The infographic shows you how to discern what content to use and illustrates the how, what, why and when to use it.

I like this analogy/metaphor. It is easy and quick to make feathers from your bricks, but the bricks take time. Can a curated collection of feathers be made into a brick? :-)

I'm glad you liked the article! I love your question, I do think a curated collection of feathers around a particular theme can be turned into a brick. What comes to mind, if you're distilling the comments from the posts (feathers) it's possible that this could evolve into a (brick) research reports, white papers, the possibilities are endless:-)

What comes to mind is that a smashed brick is a lot of feathers .. and that you can lead them back to the brick ... for example, I work with some advocacy folks who have these huge bricks called policy papers. They could tweet key points w/links back to the papers on Twitter. Have them cued up for a month in advance .. as you say the techniques are endless .. What I found most helpful was the objectives and metrics ..

Robin, I really enjoyed listening to you, I know this is aimed at non-profits but your insights, tips and suggestions are something we can all use. 

 

Here are a few things that caught my attention:

 

**BEFORE you get on the web, decide how much time you're going to spend on there, otherwise it could become addictive, and this can happen if you're not careful (hmmm how many of you can relate to this?) 

 

**Know who your audience is, pick a very specific topic,

 

**be as narrow as you can, find great pieces, pull out what you think would be relevant for them (being too broad doesn't help filter out the noise for these people, it adds to it)

Content Curators Will Be The New Great (Specialized) Newspapers [Video]

Robin Good: John McCarus, SVP for Brand Content at Digitas, ignites an interesting panel about content creation vs content curation.

 

This is the second in a series of three videos highlighting a 2012 conversation on the future of media on the social web organized by Ben Elowitz, CEO of Wetpaint.

The nicely edited video, brings up in its four minutes, some valuable takes and opinions on how curation is perceived, used and modulated to achieve different results and objectives.

 

From mere republishing and copying of someone else materials without attribution or credit (certainly not something to be categorized under "curation") to the new cadre of emerging journalists, who not only write, but also monitor, research, pre-digest and cull the most interesting content - not written by them - for their own audiences.

With content coming at us with the force of a tsunami and the fury of a tornado, curators seem to have become our saviours—our sense making guide. One post out of five I have been reading in the past few months seem to be associated with curation or its close cousins—aggregation and filtering. Even as I read, I was tempted to apply some of the curation strategies and put together this post. I like to build some context around the links because—who knows—in the Internet world, a working link today can be a dead link tomorrow.

"The wisdom of crowds, the insanity of crowds.

 

Mention the word “network” to most people and their reactions tend to sway between these two polar extremes.

 

****It’s either “crowdsourcing is the answer to everything” –

 

****or it’s a complaint that social networks like Facebook and Twitter are just “too full of chatter.”

 

If I have one takeaway from the GEO/Monitor Group conference on Networks earlier this week, it’s about how crucial the curator is in determining the difference between a successful network and one that simply makes lots of noise."

 

Disrupting Business as Usual

 

This insight hit home for me when serial entrepreneur Lisa Gansky talked about innovative businesses like CouchSurfing (http://www.couchsurfing.org/), Zipcar, and AirBnB.

 

Gansky calls these “Mesh” businesses (http://meshing.it/)—enterprises

 

****that leverage data and social networks to allow people to share resources conveniently (a car sitting idle, an extra room in your house).

 

****And she argues that they represent the future of our economy.

 

****In other words, the secret to thriving networks boils down to one thing: good curation.
