Math in Real Life - A TED-Ed Series

Math in Real Life - A TED-Ed Series | Maths teaching ideas | Scoop.it

Math in Real Life is a series of 33 TED-Ed lessons. The "real life" context in these lessons isn't things like "how calculating percentages helps you be a frugal shopper." The "real life" context found in the videos in the Math in Real Life series is broad in nature. For example, you will find lessons about how math is used to guide ships and calculating rates of travel in space.

Ever notice how eyes focus and heads turn when a vid starts in class. Be strategic in integrating videos in teaching - consider building a library of them or better yet, bookmark and tag in Diigo using content area and gradelevel.

Melissa Marshall's curator insight, June 10, 2014 10:04 PM

This is a fantastic video series and would be a great way to finish off a maths topic or start curiosity about a new one. There are 33 free lessons in here and all of them connect to how people use maths for everything from online shopping to space exploration.

Amirah Tucker's curator insight, April 3, 2014 10:18 PM

What an awesome idea! Using colors in math will not only be useful online, but also in the traditional classroom setting. It will definitely add clarity and engagement to teacher lessons. I think students would be able to understand the application part of math more to be able to solve more real-work problems, but to understand how to solve them as well.

Making Math Thinking Visible with iPads - Primary Preoccupation

Making Math Thinking Visible with iPads - Primary Preoccupation | Maths teaching ideas | Scoop.it

"My students create many different artifacts, but the most meaningful are those in which my students show their learning and their thinking in ways that are far beyond what a worksheet could do.  When they make a video or screencast of what they have learned, I can hear and see their thinking. I can also hear confidence or hesitation, self-corrections or errors in perception. Consider these math examples produced by my students."

Now that's  talking ! Specially  as it gives a door into the child's head.  This should also be pursued by analyzing writing for the same purpose. Reading ability has always taken centre stage. Putting the focus on writing is more logical .

Not an app but close enough - love it.

Elizabeth Bowden's curator insight, September 12, 2014 7:52 PM

In addition to using Lego for maths, I've taken my sons (extensive) Lego collection into History and Society & Culture to have the students (high school) demonstrate their understanding of concepts such as globalisation, communism, nationalism, capitalism. Worked really well and classes sooo happy.

Having been broken up into groups and given a concept each, They created cities or environments demonstrating the concept then talked the rest of the class through.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, September 13, 2014 4:06 PM

Fantastic ideas for using lego in mathematics. Simple hands on tasks.
