More than a Mausoleum: The Library at the Forefront of Digital Pedagogy | ACRLog | Math, technology and learning | Scoop.it
Margarita Parra's insight:
"No longer are libraries cenotaphs of long dead books but a growing organism contributed, curated, and built by the members of the university community. A focus on digital pedagogy, allows librarians the flexibility to enter this new age of librarianship with a clearer idea of what we’d like the library to be 10, 15, or 20 years from now."

Happy Birthday, Mary Somerville: The Brilliant Woman for Whom the Word “Scientist” Was Coined | Math, technology and learning | Scoop.it
How a Scottish polymath forever changed the course of gender in science and made a high art of connecting the seemingly disconnected.
Margarita Parra's insight:
"The very word “scientist” didn’t always have the overwhelmingly male connotations it has had in recent history. In fact, it was a coined for a woman — the Victorian polymath Mary Somerville (December 26, 1780–November 28, 1872), who had tutored pioneering computer programmer Ada Lovelace and later introduced her to Charles Babbage, thus sparking their legendary collaboration on the world’s first computer."

How Benoit Mandelbrot Discovered Fractals: A Short Film by Errol Morris

How Benoit Mandelbrot Discovered Fractals: A Short Film by Errol Morris | Math, technology and learning | Scoop.it
Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris talked with Benoit Mandelbrot about the origins of fractals in 2010, only 19 days before the mathematician's death. You can watch the short film online.
Margarita Parra's insight:
"Even if you know little of mathematics, you probably have some awareness of fractals. You’ve almost certainly heard them invoked, correctly or otherwise, to describe things that look or act the same at the large scale as they do at the small. You may even know the name Benoit Mandelbrot, the much-laureled Polish-French-American “father of fractal geometry.” Hard science-fiction titan Arthur C. Clarke called his eponymous set of mathematical points “one of the most astonishing discoveries in the entire history of mathematics.” Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the famously discriminating author of The Black Swan, called him “the only person for whom I have had intellectual respect.”"

If physics conspires just right, there might be an infinite number of parallel Universes out there. But we need some help.
Margarita Parra's insight:
"In other worlds, would it be possible that there’s a Universe out there where everything happened exactly as it did in this one, except you did one tiny thing different, and hence had your life turn out incredibly different as a result?"

13 books on plane geometry, geometric and abstract algebra, number theory, incommensurables, and
solid geometry.
Margarita Parra's insight:
"I'm creating this version of Euclid’s Elements for a couple of reasons. The main one is to rekindle an interest in the Elements, and the web is a great way to do that. Another reason is to show how Java applets can be used to illustrate geometry. That also helps to bring the Elements alive."
