This is a great source for ideas on real world problem solving. Grant Wiggins wrote a post last year on students ability to transfer learning and apply it to problem solving.

Specifically he says:

"Students are typically required to make four different cognitive moves to transfer learning successfully: 1) independently realize what the question is asking and think about which answers/approaches make sense here; 2) infer the most relevant prior learning from plausible alternatives; 3) try out an approach, making adjustments as needed given the context or wording; and 4) adapt their answer, perhaps, in the face of a somewhat novel or odd setting " http://grantwiggins.wordpress.com/2012/10/03/a-clarification-of-the-goal-of-transfer-and-how-it-relates-to-testing/

## Giving Choices to Support Math Learning

Mr. Faleder, a 5th Grade teacher in Montgomery County Schools gives students choices of which center they would like to use that will best support their learning of math concepts. He also used these math centers to give them options in ways they could express what they knew and understood in math. ## iSolveIt Puzzles for Multiple Grade Levels

The Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) applied UDL guidelines to the design of these puzzles that can be used at different grade levels and can be solved in many ways. Here is what they say about the features of these UDL math puzzles.

"All iSolveIt puzzles are designed with the following features:

• The puzzle sets do not connect to any specific content in the math curriculum, so they can be used throughout a yearlong curriculum.
• There are several different ways to solve the puzzles, and many puzzles have more than one solution.
• Each puzzle format has multiple levels of complexity. Students can select puzzles that they find challenging and do not have to follow any specific path through the puzzle set.
• Each puzzle format has the potential for unlimited puzzles at different levels of difficulty, and puzzles also can be solved multiple times. This ensures that the puzzles can easily be used throughout the school year.
• All puzzle formats include embedded supports designed for the specific format and based on the principles of UDL. The supports will aid reasoning skills but do not reveal the solution."
