A mom developed this math to help her son who is dysgraphic and dyslexic have a tool where he could set up math problems on virtual graph paper. She has shared this app for free and is leveling the playing field for the thousands of learners who struggle with making math legible.

 

Mod Math Specifics:

 

> Provide students with a virtual piece of graph paper, where they can set up math problems in a format that’s easily legible.

 

> Allow students to do basic math problem solving, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as fractions and equations, all without ever picking up a pencil.

 

> Print out the work pages to turn it at school, or e-mail them directly to the teacher.

This is a great source for ideas on real world problem solving. Grant Wiggins wrote a post last year on students ability to transfer learning and apply it to problem solving.

Specifically he says:

"Students are typically required to make four different cognitive moves to transfer learning successfully: 1) independently realize what the question is asking and think about which answers/approaches make sense here; 2) infer the most relevant prior learning from plausible alternatives; 3) try out an approach, making adjustments as needed given the context or wording; and 4) adapt their answer, perhaps, in the face of a somewhat novel or odd setting " http://grantwiggins.wordpress.com/2012/10/03/a-clarification-of-the-goal-of-transfer-and-how-it-relates-to-testing/


I think this site gives us a way in....Creating an approach to applying math learning.

Central Access Reader -A FREE screen reader that reads Math accurately, is going to help so many students and individuals who struggle with literacy, processing, dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other print disabilities, as well as those who are visually impaired or aging and simply benefit from hearing the math aloud. 

"Spencer Graffe, a senior in Central Washington University’s Computer Science Program, has helped develop Central Access Reader (CAR), a free computerized text-to-speech reader program that has attracted attention of institutions across the nation.

Marshall Sunnes, Central Access program coordinator and Wendy Holden, Disability and Accessibility Consultant, collaborated to determine what the program should be, how it should look, and what features were most important to include. Graffe had the skills to make it happen.

The program, developed as a tool to assist students with print-related disabilities—those with visual impairments, dyslexia, attention-deficit disorder, or other conditions—reads documents that other text-readers can’t handle, especially those with equations or symbols." "These arts and technology based activities could be used for your multiple means of engagement, representation, or expression, depending on where/how they are used throughout a unit. Puzzles are one of my favorite way to quickly get to know a student
