MBS Business Information Systems (BIS) at University College Cork

 

Overview 
The programme will provide you with a portfolio of business, management and consultancy skills, as well as enhancing your knowledge of IS concepts and core technical skills.

Programme Structure

New business project involves working as a group to develop of an innovative idea into a prototype in conjunction with a viable business plan. Throughout this project, you will be mentored by a specifically selected industry practitioner.

Overview

 
The MBS in MIMAS is a challenging course which is open to all graduates with minimal exposure to computing and accounting, as both of these disciplines are taught from an introductory level to a very high standard within two years. 

Why Choose MBS MIMAS? 
 - Six months industrial internship 
 - Dual focus of Management Information Systems and

   Managerial Accounting Systems 
 - Practical skills including a group development project. Develop

   management accounting and IS development skills (e.g. VB.NET, ASP.NET,

   MS ACCESS) to a high standard 
 - Conduct and present a business case study 
 - Minimal previous exposure to computing or accounting required 
 - CIMA exemptions 

Programme Structure 
Six taught courses and a group development project are undertaken by students in their first year of the MBS in MIMAS. 

 

In the year 2 of the programme students spend six months in a commercial organisation as an intern and are also required to undertake a research and development project which concludes in the submission of a Business Case Study.

MSc Management Information Systems (MIS) by Research at University College Cork 

 

Overview 
The Degree of MSc by Research offers you an opportunity to pursue research on a specialist topic of your choice. As part of the programme, you may opt to engage in the development of an innovative software solution for a particular business or industry sector. 

Programme Structure 
The degree is offered full time over one year and longer (at least two years) as a part-time option. Outstanding candidates may also have the option of transferring to the Department¡¯s PhD programme. 

As a Masters by Research student, you will participate in a series of seminars and produce a thesis. 

Seminars 
Seminars are presented on research methods and current issues. 

Research Methods in MIS: 
This series of seminars considers the use of research methods within the Information Systems discipline including selecting an appropriate research method and qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. 

Current Research Issues in MIS: 
This series of seminars considers current theory and research topics in the MIS field. 

Thesis 
The thesis represents an in-depth study of your chosen area of study. It is typically between 40,000 to 60,000 words, and is formally supervised by staff within BIS.
