I first heard that the National Portrait Gallery was planning an extensive exhibition devoted to the photographic portraits of Man Ray’s early last year whilst judging a London photography competition; and it instantly became an eagerly (for me at least) anticipated exhibition — and this morning the long wait was over, when I was lucky enough to see this comprehensive show ahead of its public opening tomorrow. TIME 'Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light' at MoMA New York Times All told the show provides a sweeping view of Brandt's sensibility, his wide-ranging subject matter, his obsession with the printing process as an essential part of the photographer's art...
mrstock's insight:
Totally awesome. One of the three seminal retrospectives of Brandt's work. Two of them by MoMA and one by The Bill Brandt Archive organised by John-Paul Kernot. What is not appreciated is how many fabulous images are left out of this stunning show. Go see it.

mrstock's insight:
MoMA’s new book Bill Brandt: Shadow and Light by Sarah Hermanson Meister, curator in the Department of Photography at MoMA, is a fresh look at the work of an iconic British photographer. The exhibition currently on view isn’t the first time MoMA has presentedBill Brandt’s work to the public—the last Brandt retrospective was in 1969. Since then, the Museum’s perspective of Brandt’s work has evolved into a more complete consideration of the nuances and variations in Brandt’s own photo-historical approach.

I have been making photographs for the past 40 years. My subject matter has primarily been portraits of artists. These images were made during studio visits, on trips with the artists, on vacations, in our gallery, or in my informal studio in a garage behind the gallery. Via Mario Pires Delete the scoop?
