Who Runs the World? The Hottest Names in Contemporary Art

Who Runs the World? The Hottest Names in Contemporary Art | Master of Arts | Scoop.it

A legitimate question that everyone asks – who actually runs the art world? From my view as a contemporary art critic, I think we first need to define the different sections of the market: artists, art dealers and decision makers, art collectors and foundations. Here are the movers and shakers making the scene what it is today!

Snap Up a Classic

Snap Up a Classic | Master of Arts | Scoop.it

IN THE EARLY 1970S, American artist Donald Judd moved his family from New York to Marfa, Texas, a remote town in the high desert. He was by then well-established, known internationally for his rigorously conceived, usually machine-tooled stacks and boxes, and for his radical use of humble materials such as metals, industrial plywood, concrete and Plexiglas.

12 Reasons to Check Out the NY Art Book Fair

12 Reasons to Check Out the NY Art Book Fair | Master of Arts | Scoop.it

This evening, the eighth annual NY Art Book Fair begins at MOMA PS1. I always look forward to the fair, which features an impressive variety of exhibitors, from established booksellers to indie zine publishers, and works that range from dirty comics to artistic self-help manuals to Internet-search-based works. There are antiquarian, one-of-a-kind books and ultracool multiples, even books that require the performance of rituals. Above are twelve photo-based publications (accompanied by text from the exhibitors) that I’m looking forward to seeing at the fair tonight.

Tauba Auerbach: Tetrachromat opens at Wiels Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels | Master of Arts | Scoop.it

BRUSSELS.- Tauba Auerbach is considered one of the most innovative painters of our time. Her work collapses traditional distinctions between image, dimensionality and content. 100 Pound Rice Sculpture by Saeri Kiritani | Master of Arts | Scoop.it

In a very literal interpretation of 'we are what we eat,' Japanese-born, New York-based artist Saeri Kiritani glued together over a million grains of rice for her 5-foot high self-portrait. "I grew up in Japan, where rice was the biggest part of my diet. It still is. You could say that the cells in my body are made mostly of rice!" The work is titled 100 Pounds of Rice and won the National Portrait Gallery's 2013 competition.

Artist collaborates with her four-year-old daughter, and magic results

Artist collaborates with her four-year-old daughter, and magic results | Master of Arts | Scoop.it

Artist Mica Angela Hendricks was drawing in her sketchbook, when her four-year-old daughter insisted on helping out. At first, Hendricks was resistant — but the daughter used her own "mommy words" on her. "If you can’t share, we might have to take it away." So she let her four-year-old finish some drawings, with surreal, lovely results.
