The Dark History of the Multiple-Choice Test

The Dark History of the Multiple-Choice Test | Master Leren & Innoveren | Scoop.it

"I don’t need to tell you, but the United States is one of the most tested countries in the world, and the weapon of choice is the multiple-choice test. While many scorn them because they don't allow an opportunity for learning, multiple-choice tests have become a staple in the U.S. -- from college admissions to the popular television program Who Wants to be a Millionaire?Multiple-choice questions are an accepted institution. Yet we know little about where they come from. When researching materials for my book, Save Our Science, I stumbled across their not-so-nice origins."

Harvard Professor Richard Elmore describes the significance of the teacher- student-content relationship for school improvement and change process.
Jeroen Bottema's insight:

"You don't change performance without changing the instructional core," states Anrig Professor Richard Elmore. "The relationship of the teacher and the student in the presence of content must be at the center of efforts to improve performance."

Do you know the actual theories of learning? A learning theory is an attempt to describe how people learn, helping us understand this inherently complex process.

To encourage creativity, Mr Gove, you must first understand what it is

To encourage creativity, Mr Gove, you must first understand what it is | Master Leren & Innoveren | Scoop.it
Ken Robinson: The education secretary's new national curriculum is a dead hand on the creative pulse of teachers and students alike
Jeroen Bottema's insight:

"During a recent appearance on BBC's Question Time, Michael Gove, the secretary of state for education, extolled the importance of encouraging creativity in schools. He's right. Creativity is essential to the success and fulfilment of young people, to the vitality of our communities and to the long-term health of the economy. The trouble is that his current plans for the national curriculum seem likely to stifle the creativity of students and teachers alike. Consequently, anyone with a serious interest in student achievement, cultural vitality and economic sustainability should be deeply concerned."

PhD research: Facilitating the use of recorded lectures

PhD research: Facilitating the use of recorded lectures | Master Leren & Innoveren | Scoop.it
Jeroen Bottema's insight:

"Ever since the start of the information and communication technology (ICT) era, universities and educational institutions all over the world have strived to incorporate its use into their pallet of instructional methods. The use of video, be it in the form of television broadcasts, DVDs or as video over the internet, has long been one of the important manifestations of the search for attractive learning materials that can be used independent of time and place.

The recording and broadcasting of lectures has been an important solution for distance education. But more and more, universities enhance parts of their courses aimed at on-campus students with online video components and lecture recordings. They do this to allow students to review lectures at their own pace and at a time and place of their choosing. With this increase in use, the main research question for this PhD research became increasingly more relevant:

How do students use recorded lectures and how can we facilitate effective use?"

Zo word je geen excellente leraar!

Zo word je geen excellente leraar! | Master Leren & Innoveren | Scoop.it

Via Manuela Bazen
Manuela Bazen's curator insight, April 15, 9:53 AM

Jacqueline Boerefijn's curator insight, April 17, 3:58 AM

Boeiend hoe onze blik leermachines is veranderd.

Play is making a comeback. There have been TED Talks, peer-reviewed articles inpediatrics journals, pieces in The Atlantic, and an entire industry now devoted to the “right” kind of play for our kids’ development. So why devote another 2000+ words to play and pedagogy, especially because it has already been done well by the creators of this very site?
