Jeffrey R. Young: Dozens of Plagiarism Incidents Are Reported in Coursera's Free Online Courses

Jeffrey R. Young: Dozens of Plagiarism Incidents Are Reported in Coursera's Free Online Courses | Máster en E-learning. Universidad de Sevilla | Scoop.it

Students taking free online courses offered by the startup company Coursera have reported dozens of incidents of plagiarism, even though the courses bear no academic credit. This week a professor leading one of the so-called Massive Open Online Courses posted a plea to his 39,000 students to stop plagiarizing, and Coursera's leaders say they will review the issue and consider adding plagiarism-detection software in the future.

Learning in the Workplace 2013 survey results | Jane Hart

Learning in the Workplace 2013 survey results | Jane Hart | Máster en E-learning. Universidad de Sevilla | Scoop.it

The Learning in the Workplace Survey has now been taken by over 600 people, and although it is still open if you want to cast your vote, I am going to release some interim findings here today as the results has been pretty stable for some time now.

Via Peter B. Sloep
Peter B. Sloep's curator insight, April 24, 6:51 AM

Very interesting result, though hardly surprising, of a survey held by Jane Hart about learing in the workplace. The main conclusion is that professionals do not like company-based training or e-learning and do like self-organised and self managed learning, preferably with team collaboration. The question now is how to organise this from an instructional perspective, after all, self-organised and self-managed should not mean 'you figure it out yourselves'.

My answer to this is to set up clever ways of providing peer support, using trust enhancement, recommender systems, etc. I have furhter detailed this in a fortcoming book chapter in Littlejohn, L. & Margaryan A. (Eds.) Technology-enhanced Professional Learning: Processes, Practices and Tools. London: Routledge, which is still in the works however (expected publication date early 2014) (@pbsloep)

#MOOC Mania: Debunking the hype around massive open online courses

#MOOC Mania: Debunking the hype around massive open online courses | Máster en E-learning. Universidad de Sevilla | Scoop.it
Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, April 22, 12:42 PM

In the fall of 2011, Stanford University offered three of its engineering courses—Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Introduction to Databases—for free online. Anyone with Internet access could sign up for them. As Sebastian Thrun, the director of Stanford’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, tells the story, he assumed just a handful of people would enroll in his graduate-level AI class. Instead, more than 160,000 students registered. A massive number.

That’s when the enormous hype began about massive open online courses, better known as “MOOCs.” Since then, Thrun and his fellow lab professors Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng have founded education organizations that offer free online classes. Thrun’s start-up is called Udacity (in part, a takeoff on the word “audacious”), and Koller and Ng’s is Coursera. In December 2011, in response to Stanford’s initiatives, MIT launched its own effort, called MITx (short for “Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange”), and a few months later joined forces with Harvard, drolly changing the name of the organization to edX. A consortium of British universities has also created its own MOOC platform, Futurelearn. So far, more than 90 universities worldwide have teamed up with one or more of these MOOC providers, prompting the New York Times to crown 2012 as “The Year of the MOOC.”

Design Implications of the testing effect: Online learning: It’s different

Design Implications of the testing effect: Online learning: It’s different | Máster en E-learning. Universidad de Sevilla | Scoop.it
By interspersing online lectures with short tests, student mind-wandering decreased by half, note-taking tripled, and overall retention of the material improved, said Daniel Schacter, the William R. Kenan Jr.

“What we hope this research does is show that we can use very strong, experimentally sound techniques to describe what works in online education and what doesn’t,” said Szpunar. “The question, basically, is how do we optimize students’ time when they’re at home, trying to learn from online lectures? How do we help them most efficiently extract the information they need?

“At the very least, what this says is that it’s not enough to break up lectures into smaller segments, or to fill that break with some activity,” he said. “What we really need to do is instill in students the expectation that they will need to express what they’ve learned at some later point. I think it’s going to be a very sobering thought for a lot of people to think that students aren’t paying attention almost half the time, but this is one way we can help them get more out of these online lectures.”

Via Dennis T OConnor
Dennis T OConnor's curator insight, April 13, 11:45 PM

The techniques described in this article deal directly with how to miinimize distractions when learning online. Clearly the testing effect can minimize mind wandering.

However, this insight delt with one of my major concerns, "Another surprising effect of the testing, Szpunar said, was to reduce testing anxiety among students, and to ease their fears that the lecture material would be very challenging."

If short, low stakes, multiple trial testing can lower test anxiety, everyone wins.   do I need to emphasize that short aumtomatic graded tests are something the LMS does very well?  When we get the rare combination of a design that improves student retention, with easy and time savings for the instructor it's time to PAY ATTENTION!

Lynn Dixon's curator insight, April 16, 10:32 AM

Well put- and the comments by Dennis T OConnor are also well received.  A strategy for getting students focused on the content and checking for understanding while ALSO minimizing test anxiety, is a great strategy!

Kate Bowles's comment, April 18, 8:08 PM
For hospitable pedagogy: how do we anticipate that students react differently to the same content delivered in different ways: what adaptive measures are already in our minds?

I personally would change the Social Aspect to the Resource (learning material) Aspect. I think the social can be captured through the learner aspect but I see the learning material as being a critical part of the framework, especially when it comes to putting theory into practice.

well, it is a pity that two skilled professionals do not know to how to do converge assertively their differences, and result in better contents, and content curation. Both of you are partly right and partly wrong, under my point of view, and instead of focusing in your differences, why don´t you focus on what may bring you together?
