MOOCs have become one of the United States’ major educational exports. In the first year of MOOCs offered by Harvard and MIT through the online education site edX, two-thirds of the enrollees hailed from outside North America.
Now, some online education advocates argue that MOOCs can lure international students to colleges and universities in the U.S. The University of Pennsylvania has developed a MOOC precisely for this purpose: a course titled “Applying to U.S. Universities.” And the State Department has woven online courses into its international education agenda, with the hope that MOOC-driven outreach programs will entice foreign students to study in the U.S.
Norway became the first country in the world to appoint a government commission to examine the potential of MOOCs from a national perspective. In June 2013 the Ministry of Education appointed a committee of academics and educational experts to investigate the opportunities and challenges that the rapid growth of MOOCs pose to Norwegian higher education. The commission has now (16 June) presented its first full report and since it is at present only available in Norwegian it might be of interest to the rest of the world to get an overview of the conclusions (read the Norwegian version).

Monash recently offered its first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Creative Coding, as a collaborative venture through FutureLearn.

About the data: The edX MOOC data released by Harvard and MIT covered 16 sections of 13 courses from the first year of edX, from fall 2012 to summer 2013. About 475,000 students and about 640,000 registrations are included. Although there were 841,000 registrations in these courses, 200,000 rows of data were deleted by HarvardX and MITx in the de-identification process. De-identification was most likely to remove outliers and extremely active users, which may affect some of the analysis.
