Online standards the new challenge

Online standards the new challenge | Massively MOOC | Scoop.it
ONLINE open courseware and the connected rising interest in e-portfolios for student assessment will be as much of challenge for standards as it is now for the educators looking to adapt their curricula.

ONLINE open courseware and the connected rising interest in e-portfolios for student assessment will be as much of challenge for standards as it is now for the educators looking to adapt their curricula. Griffith University vice-chancellor Ian O'Connor said changes sweeping university teaching would create new challenges for those attempting to monitor academic standards.

But it will inevitably lead to a greater focus on the assessment of student outcomes and graduate capabilities.

The growth of massive open online courses, backed by the likes of Stanford, Harvard and MIT, are impossible to ignore and universities are increasingly taking advantage of such content.

Deakin University has said it will embed some of these MOOCs into its own curriculum. Others, such as University of Technology, Sydney, are looking to follow suit.

At the same time, online technology is making it easier for universities to develop and share high-quality content.

edX: This is how you do online courses for credit - eCampus News | Massively MOOC | Scoop.it
Offering online courses for credit is a unique endeavor for each institution, but the fundamentals are the same: To offer courses for credit, you need to verify student I.D. and protect against exam cheating. But how can a program do this most efficiently and successfully?

According to Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX, one answer lies in the ability of a virtual proctoring solution’s decoupling of exam taking from proctoring verification.

While highlighting the obvious benefits of MOOCs for self-motivated individuals, this aricle does a nice job of also explaining the importance of face-to-face interaction with the instructor for many students to succeed.  Blending MOOCs with other forms of delivery may be a way for MOOCs to move forward with lower dropout rates.

Why Every College Teacher Should Take a MOOC This Fall

Why Every College Teacher Should Take a MOOC This Fall | Massively MOOC | Scoop.it
It’s move-in week this week at the state university campus across the street from where I live and where I taught for several years. This occasion always reminds of the ominous first paragraph of Don DeLillo’s 1984 academic satire White Noise, which begins, “The station wagons arrived at noon.”The station wagons and the provisions they carry have changed in 30 years, but the dislocation recorded by the narrator hasn’t. The students still “get younger every year,” as my colleagues like to joke. T

ASU's edX MOOC deal: Lots of links and a few thoughts

ASU's edX MOOC deal: Lots of links and a few thoughts | Massively MOOC | Scoop.it

It's stuff like this that keeps me going and reminds me that this MOOC book project might be relevant after all....

...Like I said, maybe all this program needs to do to be successful is to attract some students who would have otherwise tried to go to ASU anyway. Maybe it will be successful as a PR move, too: some students take some ASU MOOCs, have good experiences, and decide to enroll there for real. But for MOOCs to really represent a “sea change” in higher education, it seems to me they need to address the top motivating factors for students’ choices about what school to attend and not just costs.

The State of the MOOC

The State of the MOOC | Massively MOOC | Scoop.it
So after a couple of years since MOOCs become a recognized eLearning strategy (and for the sake of our readers, I’ll suppose you know what generally defines a MOOC), where do they stand? Still the possible future of education? Still a developing concept? Or perhaps a failed experiment?

I’ll stand in the middle, aligning myself with ‘developing concept’, as there is promise, hype, and both encouraging and discouraging results.
