EURODL Journal article: Emotive vocabulary in MOOCs: Context and participant retention

EURODL Journal article: Emotive vocabulary in MOOCs: Context and participant retention | Massive Open Online Courses | Scoop.it
Online discussions are as important in MOOCs as in other online courses. Online discussions that occur in MOOCs are influenced by additional factors resulting from their volatile and voluntary participation structure. This article aims to examine discussions that took place in MobiMOOC in the spring of 2011, a MOOC structured around mobile learning. This line of inquiry focused on language from the discussions that contained emotive vocabulary in the MobiMOOC discussion forums. Emotive vocabulary is words or phrases that are implicitly emotional (happy, sad, frustrated) or relate to emotional contexts (I wasn’t able to…). This emotive vocabulary, when present, was examined to determine whether it could serve as a mechanism for predicting future and continued participation in the MOOC.

20,000 students in the first 24 hours: UK enters MOOC space with social, mobile FutureLearn

20,000 students in the first 24 hours: UK enters MOOC space with social, mobile FutureLearn | Massive Open Online Courses | Scoop.it
Until last Wednesday, US-based learning platforms have led the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Together, those platforms, including Coursera, edX, and Udacity, serve an estimated 3 million learners worldwide with courses from a number of elite partner institutions, such as Harvard and MIT. But now, in the same week in which edX announced a partnership with Google for the development of a new, open-source online learning system, the UK has launched its own – and its first-ever – MOOC platform: FutureLearn.

Lessons Learned from Vanderbilt’s First MOOCs | Center for Teaching | Vanderbilt University

Lessons Learned from Vanderbilt’s First MOOCs | Center for Teaching | Vanderbilt University | Massive Open Online Courses | Scoop.it

When Vanderbilt announced its massive open online course (MOOC) initiative almost twelve months ago, one of the stated goals of the project was to explore ways that digital technologies might enhance Vanderbilt’s teaching mission. As faculty, staff, and students worked over the last year to launch Vanderbilt’s first three MOOCs, we grappled with the following question: How do you create effective learning environments online for thousands and thousands of students? We haven’t fully answered that question, but we have learned much about the design and implementation of MOOCs. As Vanderbilt prepares to launch its next two MOOCs in September and as the instructors of those first three MOOCs look ahead to leveraging their online experiences in their on-campus courses, it’s a good time to reflect on some lessons learned over the last year.
