Premature Babies Can Benefit From Massage

Premature Babies Can Benefit From Massage | massage | Scoop.it

Many adults turn to massage therapy for stress relief, but new research published in the journal Early Human Development suggests that some pre-term infants forced to spend time in newborn intensive care units could also benefit from muscle manipulation.

Breanna Peltekian's curator insight, October 29, 2014 11:42 PM

This website blog was created by the staff of RedOrbit and it discusses the ways in which massaging premature babies could help them lower their high stress levels, especially in neonatal intensive care units (“Massage therapy,” 2013). RedOrbit does seem like a reputable source because it is a science/health based website, and this particular blog has collected its information from a study done by experts at the University of Utah. They mention in this website that preemie babies’ brains are not fully developed, and neither is their autonomic nervous system (ANS) (“Massage therapy,” 2013). Not having a fully-developed ANS is known to cause stress in the infants (Smith, Haley, Slater, & Moyer-Mileur, 2013). Since massage therapy has been shown to reduce the stress levels of premature babies by stimulating the ANS in order for it to continue developing, a study has been done to test this suggestion. This study used infants and split them into two categories: one group received massage therapy for four consecutive weeks, and the control group did not (Smith et al., 2013). The results were that the male infants who received massage therapy had increased heart rate variability and were able to sleep more after receiving a massage. The female infants did not show a significant change, and were therefore considered unaffected by the massage therapy. The article could be helpful for mothers with male babies, but since the article showed no significant impact with the female babies, the mothers of the female babies may not be helped as much with knowing how to lower the stress levels of their newborns. This study essentially presents a natural way in which the stress caused by the underdevelopment of autonomic nervous systems, which babies undergo in neonatal intensive care units, can be reduced (Smith et al., 2013). As the Myers textbook also discusses, premature babies are able to go home from neonatal intensive care units sooner when treated with massage therapy (2014).

Alex Warner's curator insight, April 10, 2013 10:05 PM

Everyone has a some levels of stress in their life. This stress ranges from minor everyday stress to some irrelavent problems that doesn't happen that often. Therefore, when you get stressed out keep some things in mind to bring yourself down. First, take a step back from the situation, there is no reason why you can't try to comprehend what is going on from an outside and calm perspective. Then, try to take a deep breath, when stressful, it is proven that you tend to have less oxygen flow to your brain so make it absolute that you are taking deep breaths. Finally, do another activity to take you mind off the situation at hand. It doesn't have to be some big or long, but make sure that you try to clear your head before coming back.
