At Bain, Mitt Romney Wanted to Harvest Companies

At Bain, Mitt Romney Wanted to Harvest Companies | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

People often ask me,"Charlie, where do you come up with the many fine shorthand nicknames for our politicians that you use in your blog?" (Actually, only one person ever has asked me that, and I suspect he was doing some sort of personality evaluation because he bit down so hard on a pencil that he broke three teeth.) And, of course, I tell them that, often, the politicians are nice enough to be very helpful in this regard.

Reflections on Mayor Menino's endorsement, back when voters thought Scott Brown was a nice guy

Reflections on Mayor Menino's endorsement, back when voters thought Scott Brown was a nice guy | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

Menino did appear to lay some groundwork for the eventual endorsement at the Labor Day breakfast, deploying the phrase “Brown is a Nice Guy But,” which has become a staple of Democratic speeches “What’s he stand for? Mitch McConnell,” Menino asked at the union hall on Monday, referring to the Kentucky Republican who leads the minority caucus in the Senate. “That’s who he stands for.” Warren is “good people,” the mayor said. “She’ll have our back in Washington. I’m going to have her back over the next 39 days.”

Editorial: Brown’s ‘uh-oh’ moment at the Eire | Dorchester Reporter

Editorial: Brown’s ‘uh-oh’ moment at the Eire | Dorchester Reporter | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

The ‘uh-oh’ moment for Boston politicos in the disastrous Martha Coakley campaign of 2010 came on the Sunday morning before the special election. Even before most citizens could begin to rub the sleep out of their pre-Mass eyes, the calls started coming in to ward bosses and precinct captains about Dot Ave. There were scores of red-and-blue Scott Brown placards grinning at them from storefront windows from Lower Mills to Columbia Road. The Coakley team had been caught flat-footed and it was all the worse because there was not a single Coakley sign to be had inside the 128 belt. They didn’t think they’d need them.

How Massachusetts Became 2012's Nastiest Race

How Massachusetts Became 2012's Nastiest Race | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

The U.S.Senate race in Massachusetts between Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren was supposed to be one of the highlights of the election year: a battle of ideas between a charismatic moderate Republican and a nationally-revered, liberal consumer advocate. Instead, it’s degenerated into one of 2012’s most negative and petty campaigns, thanks to Scott Brown and Jim Barnett, a Karl Rove-trained ratfker.

Who's Winning the Big Insurance Primary?

Who's Winning the Big Insurance Primary? | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

Republican Scott Brown has been working very hard to misrepresent the role that his Democratic challenger, Elizabeth Warren, played in a lawsuit involving Travelers Insurance. While Brown's negative attacks are misleading, he does raise a provocative point: insurance companies (and, well, any company or special interest) will allocate their resources where they think it will do the most good to benefit their goals. Of course, in the case of insurance companies, the goal is maximizing profit.

Elizabeth Warren assisted mining company

Elizabeth Warren assisted mining company | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it
Warren also helped write a petition to the US Supreme Court for LTV Steel in the 1990s, assisting the former industrial conglomerate in its fight against a congressional requirement that it pay millions of dollars into a fund for its retired coal miners’ health care.

Her advocacy on behalf of a large corporation, opposing a mandate to pay for the health benefits of blue-collar retirees and their families, would seem to undercut her image as a middle-class champion, the central message of the Democrat’s Senate campaign against Brown, the Republican.

But Warren’s campaign argues that the retirees’ benefits were not in danger, even if LTV had won its legal battle. And it argues that she was fighting for a principle that could protect less powerful people who have claims against bankrupt companies.
