Hiller: Lowell not Scott Brown’s best debate; Elizabeth Warren has never been better | WHDH-TV | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

This was a good debate, and it was close. Both candidates had moments when they connected, and both—at times—disconnected. On balance, I thought it was not Scott Brown’s best debate, and I thought Elizabeth Warren has never been better.

Scott Brown Got a Little Testy in His Debate with Elizabeth Warren

Scott Brown Got a Little Testy in His Debate with Elizabeth Warren | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it
Sen. Scott Brown had a hard time hiding his contempt for challenger Elizabeth Warren at their second debate in Lowell, Massachusetts on Monday evening. Brown was quick to attack Warren on her character, her legal record and, of course, her heritage. He even pulled the self-important professor card on Warren, who's on the faculty at Harvard Law School.

In one confrontation that The Boston Globe says is "destined to become a sound bite on the nightly news," Warren went after Brown for voting against jobs bills and ruffled his feathers a bit

LOWELL -- From dueling endorsements from local politicians to same-day visits to television advertisements, Lowell has been a central battleground for U.S. Sen. Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren in their Senate race, but their biggest Lowell duel to date will come Monday night.

The two candidates, who are very close in the polls, are set to face off for an hour before 4,500 people at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell in their second head-to-head clash of the race. Another 13,000-plus people interested in attending had to be turned away.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Numerous Media Outlets Liken Republican Scott Brown's Racially Insensitive Mudslinging to Right-Wing | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it
BOSTON - The notorious "birther" movement, as it has come to be known, is a right-wing fringe effort that has tried to convince the American electorate that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States and that his birth certificate is a forgery. The "birther" movement has not only been debunked, but has been roundly dismissed for its conspiracy theory-style lunacy.

What I learned at the debate like event in Lowell | massmarrier

What I learned at the debate like event in Lowell | massmarrier | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

Much will be made of Brown's few and acid weapons — Native-American ancestry, and his knowingly false portrayal of two complex legal settlements Warren lawyered in. What I learned instead from his smirks, sarcasm and sidesteps is that he fully expects to continue a content-free campaign. Even with nearly two years of recorded votes, he refuses to let anyone, another candidate much less a voter, hold him accountable.

Romney Fades, Taking GOP Senate Hopes With Him (CHART)

Romney Fades, Taking GOP Senate Hopes With Him (CHART) | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

Mitt Romney’s decline nationally and in various swing states in September dovetailed with the dip seen by Republican candidates in key Senate races. Consider the recent developments in various states.

Always a lock to carry Massachusetts, President Barack Obama’s support has swelled in the Bay State over the last month, with some polls showing him eclipsing the 60 percent threshold. As Obama has expanded his advantage there over Romney, Democratic Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren has grabbed the lead from Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) during the same period.

Letter: Scott Brown is the great pretender | SouthCoastToday

Letter: Scott Brown is the great pretender | SouthCoastToday | Massachusetts Senate Race 2012 | Scoop.it

It would be a huge mistake to buy into Scott Brown's image as an independent voice in the Senate. As Elizabeth Warren rightly pointed out in their first debate, his 2010 vote against former Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court was Republican party line all the way. He feigned even-handedness, calling her "brilliant," but clearly he never intended to give her an unbiased, "independent" assessment — only the pretense of one.

Real Independents run for office without the backing of either major party and thus are free to vote according to their own best judgment. Tellingly, the Senate's only two real Independents, Joe Liebermann and Bernie Sanders voted to confirm Kagan, as did Maine's authentically independent-minded Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Pretend independent Scott Brown just fell into line behind his boss, Mitch McConnel, in rejecting his eminently qualified fellow Bay Stater.
