▶ Glee-Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself) [Full Performance] - YouTube

Great message from Glee

Lauren Fees's insight:

I watch Glee, I love it. This show is very popular among young girls. and in this episode and in previous it talks about character Emma is battling an eating disorder and hates the way she looks. Jake, her boyfriend doesn't know how to help, other than to say I am here I love you. I think this is a powerful episode because it faces the growing popular of an unrealistic beauty. But also shows that this is how you treat a woman you love. Which is equally important to teach our sons. I love that Ne-yo did this song

A positive body image goes beyond liking your looks. It encompasses taking good care of yourself and leading a fulfilling life.
Lauren Fees's insight:

I really like this. It isn't really about combating media, but about how you shouldn't base your body image and self worth entirely on what you see in the mirror. It should also come from how you feel about yourself

Women Are Judged Differently! 5 Things Women Are Judged More Harshly For Than Men!

Women Are Judged Differently! 5 Things Women Are Judged More Harshly For Than Men! | Mass Media's Ideal Beauty | Scoop.it

Despite all of the advances toward gender equality, many people still expect different things from men and women. No matter where you live or which culture you belong to, Judging a woman is different!

Lauren Fees's insight:

Why do women get judged so harshly for these things? It is a double edged sword. 1. Too few sexual partners and you are a prude. 2. Having a "picture perfect" home you are OCD and a clean freak. 3. Being too skinny, you have an eating disorder and need to eat a cheese burger. 4. Being soft spoken means you are shy and very passive, which employers do not like in potential employees. 5. Having kids too young; you haven't lived your life, you are too young to understand what it takes to be a parent. Or you don't understand what birth control is.

Lauren Fees's insight:

I really identify with this. I hate labeling myself as a feminist because it leads people to think of you in a certain light. I don't fall in either extreme but in a middle ground.

James Franco is barely recognizable on the cover of Candy Magazine. Terry Richardson shot the actor, with his hair slicked back, wearing blue eyeshadow and thick red lipstick.Candy is the first fashion magazine ever completely dedicated to celebrating transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny.

It is right to the point. I think it is great that he is making such a powerful stance

Gender Equality Is a Lie: Little Girls Deserve Better
Huffington Post
When I wrote "Stop Calling Assertive Women B*tches," I was trying to call attention to a double standard in our society.
Lauren Fees's insight:

We teach our children the double standard. They grow up being apart of it because we refuse to step out of your comfort zone and talk to our children about what they see and hear. We show pink and purple dolls at our daughters and G.I.'s at our sons. We enroll them in extra circular activities that are for boys or for girls, we don't let them know its okay to be different and do what makes them happy. Instead we teach them to fit in there gender role.

The campaign aims to enhance young girl self-esteem and counter the unrealistic images of women portrayed by media.

Lauren Fees's insight:

Every city and every state should have a campaign like this. What how about we launch a national campaign organization, coming from our government. Something that media can't get its hands on and mold to how they want.

The Problematic Disney Body Image Trend We're Not Talking About - PolicyMic

The Problematic Disney Body Image Trend We're Not Talking About - PolicyMic | Mass Media's Ideal Beauty | Scoop.it
PolicyMic The Problematic Disney Body Image Trend We're Not Talking About PolicyMic The Habit Heroes exhibit closed just three weeks after its soft launch (it has since relaunched with a kinder approach), but Disney is guilty of a decades old...
Lauren Fees's insight:

Disney is getting a lot of praise and a lot of harsh criticism. While I agree Disney should not have shaved off so many dress sizes for the Ursula doll and that there should be an "average sized, or plus sized", how about just normal, female protagonist. Disney is making steps in the right direction with there most current movies. Brave, Frozen, and The Princess and The Frog. Alice and Wonderland and The Little Mermaid were made many years ago before we as a society became aware of how harmful Fat-shaming and the "ideal beauty". Disney is changing the way they do movies. But not everything is going to happen over night and they will get it wrong sometimes too. People do work for Disney and people do mess up and get it wrong. I think we need to show support for what Disney is doing right, let them know what we don't like and give them a chance to fix it.

▶ Media's Effect on Beauty. - YouTube

Thanks Judy and Beck!
Lauren Fees's insight:

These models don't even end up looking like themselves. This unattainable beauty standard distorts how we see ourselves. We learn that we are only worthy of love and happiness if we look like what we see in advertisements. Which is not real beauty, unrealistic and not ideal. But we still try to reach that standard because we are told we have to

This is the best attitude!
Lauren Fees's insight:

I cannot wait to be old. I try not to care what the other students think of me but their judgmental eyes can make me want to shy away and ask whats wrong with me. Nothing is wring with me, I just dress differently then you and lead a different life, stop judging me cause I don't fit in your bubble. Again, I can't wait to grow old.

Lauren Fees's insight:

If every parent took the time to think about what their daughters are actually look at everyday they would be mortified. Maybe that is why they don't look. Thankfully this Dad did and he is AWESOME for it! Love his words to his daughter, great way to start to teach our children what beauty actually is and how to value themselves.
