Beth Dichter's curator insight, January 19, 8:46 AM

Richard Byrne has created an eBook that provides step-by-step directions on creating a simple comic using the free version of Storybard That. You will find information on how to create the following projects:

* Project #1 - Crafting Fiction Stories with Comics and Crafting Short Stories with Comics

* Project #2 - Telling True Stories with Comics

* Project #3 - Turning Comic Strips into Movies

* Project #4 - Book Trailer Comics Videos

* Project #5 - Publishing Multimedia eBooks

Storyboard That also has a premium version (which costs money) and this version allows you to create and manage student accounts for your classroom. If you plan on using comics as a tool for students to demonstrate their understanding you will also find screenshots on how to do this in the eBook.

Striking a Balance: Digital Tools and Distraction in School

Striking a Balance: Digital Tools and Distraction in School | Maryland School Libraries and Technology | Scoop.it

When my students leave high school, they will need to know norms and etiquette for their devices. They will also need to know themselves -- specifically, their own limits when it comes to distraction. Eventually, they should know when to put their phone away because it's distracting them, or when listening to music while they work is slowing them down.

Unas interesantes apreciaciones, las de este post, sobre los motivos que pueden provocar distracciones en los alumnos mientras éstos trabajan con herramientas digitales. El nivel de dificultad (si es demasiado bajo) podría ser un factor.

If only we could be consistent right through their entire educational lives...it will happen!
Kimberly House's curator insight, September 4, 2013 3:43 PM

I like the idea of packing this into the first week of school. It needs to be followed up, of course. My bigger worry is how much to teachers and parents know about these topics? They need to be incorporated into the training as well.

“When you are able to read closely you are doing three things at once:

Lens – What am I looking for? (examples:  text evidence, word choice, structure, figurative language)Patterns –  What patterns do I notice?  (Not to pick out one just one word, but to look across the text to determine ‘What does the author tend to do?’)Idea -What is the big idea that this author is writing about?   (not just confirm previous thinking)”  (Kate Roberts, 6/26/2013, Teachers College Writing Institute)
