Are Facebook Pulling A Fast One On Us All With Their Advertising Platform?

Are Facebook Pulling A Fast One On Us All With Their Advertising Platform? | MarketingHits | Scoop.it
I’m a huge fan of Facebook and have made that very clear over the last few years here on the blog. I think all the IPO stuff has been blown out of all proportion over the last couple of weeks and to highlight just how smart I think the company are I’ve explained below 3 of the ways in which they are extracting money from people. One thing that I do agree with the whole fuss on the IPO is that advertising alone is probably not going to help Facebook grow towards the lofty valuations that many have on the stock price. To truly unlock their huge potential they are going to have to find multiple revenue streams because as the examples below show they are probably milking just about as much as they already can out of advertising as it is. What will be interesting to see is just how much value advertisers get out of the platform on a long term basis and also how Facebook can take these formats over to mobile. It’s also a well known fact that ads to lead to 3rd party sites have a very poor click through rate meaning that most campaigns stay within the confines of Facebook’s walled garden. To understand Facebook’s magic trick when it comes to advertising have a look at these three simple steps…

Student Sets Off Firecrackers to Protest Crappy Internet Connection

We’ve all felt the frustration of a bad internet connection from time to time. But when the internet on one part of campus at a college in Dongguan began to malfunction, dropping the connection every five or so minutes, one student took things further than the rest of us might. He purchased firecrackers — apparently, quite a lot of them — and has been staging a daily protest at 12:00 midnight every day.

IKEA under fire for ancient tree logging

IKEA under fire for ancient tree logging | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Wholly owned subsidiary Swedwood accused of clear-cutting ancient Russian forests for use in furniture

The home furnishing giant Ikea, founded in Sweden in 1943, is facing heavy criticism for the logging and clear-cutting of old-growth forests in the north of Russian Karelia by its wholly owned subsidiary Swedwood.

According to leading environmental organisations, such logging is destroying ancient and unique forests that have a high conservation value.

Wood is by far the primary raw material in Ikea's products. Roughly 60 percent of the products stocked in the multinational's 300 department stores around the world contain wood in any form.

For years, the company has used the "We Love Wood" slogan to promote the fact that Ikea only uses wood obtained in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable way.

But recent reports and studies prove that this proclamation is a myth.

Fruit Ninja Tops 300M+ Downloads After Two Years, Now Installed On 1/3 Of All U.S. iPhones | MarketingHits | Scoop.it
It feels like it was just yesterday that I was downloading Fruit Ninja on a review unit of the iPad, swiping away at juicy watermelons and nearly-invisible kiwis.

But the app has been around for a while — two years to be exact. And over the span of 24 months, Halfbrick’s deliciously addictive game has become so popular that it is now installed on 1/3 of the iPhones in the United States.

The app has surpassed the 300 million download mark, with 1.5 trillion pieces of fruit sliced. But the crazy stats don’t end there. Every day, the cumulative time we spend playing Fruit Ninja over the course of 24 hours tops 100 years. Who knew slicing flying fruit would be such a sensation?

Chinese Man Tries to Track Ex-Girlfriend via GPS, Loses Hundreds

The advent of mobile phones with GPS technology may have made people easier to track, but even GPS can’t save us from karma. That’s what Mr. Qi, a 45-year-old Chinese man learned the hard way when he tried to use GPS to track down his ex-girlfriend and ended up out several hundred dollars.

Qi’s girlfriend left him, and on the advice of friends, Qi decided to look into tracking her via global positioning systems. He found a number online and ordered a card that ostensibly was supposed to help him track her down. He paid 1200 RMB ($190) for it. But then when he tried to use it to connect to the system, he discovered it required a password. He contacted the seller, who sold him a password for 600 RMB ($95).
