Sitting around all day isn't just making you unhealthy. It might also be making you dumber.

Sitting around all day isn't just making you unhealthy. It might also be making you dumber. | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Your desk, scientists reported recently, is trying to kill you.

According to the New York Times, scientists discovered that when we sit all day, "electrical activity in the muscles drops… leading to a cascade of harmful metabolic effects," and sadly even getting regular doses of exercise doesn't offset the damage. But now there's new evidence of the harm of sitting. Not only is it making you fatter, it might also be making you dumber.

Sabine Schaefer, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany, recently looked at the effect of walking on working memory. Your mother may have warned you not to walk and chew gum at the same time, but when Schaefer compared the performance of both children and young adults on a standard test of working memory when they were sitting with when they were walking, her results contradicted mom's advice. The British Psychological Society's Research Digest sums up the research results:

The headline finding was that the working memory performance of both age groups improved when walking at their chosen speed compared with when sitting or walking at a fixed speed set by the researchers. This was especially the case for more difficult versions of the working memory task, and was more pronounced among the children than the adults. So, this would appear to be clear case of mental performance actually being superior in a dual-task situation.

Content Curation your secret weapon - Drive Traffic & Find New Customers

Content Curation your secret weapon - Drive Traffic & Find New Customers | MarketingHits | Scoop.it
Using Content Curation To Find New Customers.

Being an Internet marketer for many years I’ve seen the landscape change many times but one thing has stayed the same “Content is King”, when it comes to driving traffic to a website.

As a business owner we all want to get new customers to our websites. Many have tried blogging to drive traffic to their website and due to a shortage of hours in a day they end up dropping the blog or hiring ghost writers to develop content for the site. We now have a new player on the net and it comes in the form of Content Curation. No it will not completely eliminate business owners creating content for their website but adds a whole new area of content development for a website.

Over the past two years I’ve tested different content curation sites and tools and have found Scoop.it to be the leader in both innovation and traffic building potential.

Below are examples on how Scoop.it can drive traffic and help to show the world, yes the world that your business knows your market.

In this article are 3 areas that when done correctly can drive new traffic to your business or brand?.

Mobile Minute [Video]: Should Marketers Care About Google Glass?

Mobile Minute [Video]: Should Marketers Care About Google Glass? | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Here's what marketers need to know about Glass.

Glass presents obstacles—from its odd look to its current $1,500 price tag. Google knows this, and it has addressed it by partnering with Warby Parker to design less geeky frames.

Google's real problem is selling people on a new technology they're not even sure they need. It's the same issue Apple faced with the first iPhone.

Many people think Glass is augmented reality, but it’s not. Instead, Glass is tethered to your smartphone, and it visually recognizes your environment.

9 Social Marketing Metrics That Actually Matter

9 Social Marketing Metrics That Actually Matter | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Even the most social-savvy business owners can get caught up in the numbers game: counting and recounting likes, followers, fans, retweets, shares. Not to say those numbers don't correlate to how well your business connects with customers online, but 100 shares doesn't necessarily mean 100 sales — and it certainly doesn't measure the potential value of those 100 shares.

For example, were any of the 100 fans sharing that post actually influencers? Did the fans in question sign up for your list, or share and forget? Are your likes and follows actually impacting your sales? Many business owners wouldn't know how to start answering those questions.

Influence marketing: What’s next? | Mark Schaefer

Influence marketing: What’s next? | Mark Schaefer | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Traditional media is on the decline and we can now identify "influencers" with relevant content pipelines to help us. Now what do we do about it? All the old “pipelines” for our content are drying up. So one viable alternative is to borrow somebody else’s pipeline. Today, bloggers, podcasters, and home video producers are gaining consumer mindshare through their passionate and entertaining content. No wonder this is the new media gold rush — influencer outreach. I have a 360-degree experience with this trend as I strategize with clients, advise agencies, and become a target for outreach programs myself. And what I see is not pretty. Sure we have tons of content. We have lots of wonderful new alternatives to identify influencers. Now, what do we do about it? I think the core competency that needs to develop is a mindset transformation from a “purchaser of ad space” to a “developer of relationships.” Here is a model to get you thinking about this in a new way.... Will it be celebrity, advocates or influencers?

Social Justice: Disney Straddles the Line on Merida via @arcintel

Social Justice: Disney Straddles the Line on Merida via @arcintel | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

The Conforming Merida

If you somehow missed the entire Merida makeover uproar, here are the facts:

  • Brenda Chapman, Oscar winning creator of Merida, modeled the princess after her own daughter. At the heart of Merida is a strong, brave young woman who refuses to conform to society’s plans for her.
  • Brave was a blockbuster, grossing over $550 million worldwide, and winning a Best Oscar for Animated Feature.
  • For reasons known only to Disney, as Merida was about to be crowned the 11th Disney Princess, they altered her image.  A thin waist, smoothed down hair, and a made up face, sent Merida admirers into an online tailspin.
Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com's insight:

It'll be interesting to see how Disney handles this one. With all the Disney dollars I am sure that character design research and user/viewer groups studies were conducted before the final character design was approved.

As a marketer, father of four lovely young women and grandfather of three cute little girls I like to watch how marketing influences their decisions.

Just the other day I asked my oldest granddaughter (age 7) why she always got the girl toy with her McDonald's Happy Meal even though she liked the boy toys that were displayed. She said that she had to or she would be lying to McDonald's, so grandpa explained how marketing works.

I am happy to report, that her last happy meal included a cool boy toy.

How Social Media Impacts SEO and Site Ranking: infographic

How Social Media Impacts SEO and Site Ranking: infographic | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Search engine optimization has not been dependent on a minimal number of factors for a long time now, such as number of times a keyword appeared on a page, and it continues to become a more complex web of on and off-page factors every month. One of the more recent factors that has had an impact on search ranking is social media.

This infographic breaks down ways that social media influences the visibility of your website in search results, including:

  • Social media can help search engines find and index your content faster
  •  Likes, shares, retweets, etc. indicates to search engine that content is new and interesting, often leading to a temporary increase in rankings
  • Your content will increase in search results for people connected to you
  • Increases domain authority and the number of inbound links to your website

Google Faces Another Antitrust Probe As Canadian Agency Prepares Formal Investigation

Google Faces Another Antitrust Probe As Canadian Agency Prepares Formal Investigation | MarketingHits | Scoop.it

Google is facing another competition investigation, according to the Financial Post. The Canadian Competition Bureau has informed Mountain View of its plans to launch a formal investigation of its Canadian operations. It has not yet requested any information or documents from Google but has informed the search giant of its intention to launch a probe.

The Bureau declined to comment on the scope of the investigation, noting that it is obliged by law to conduct investigations confidentially. Asked for comment on the probe, Leslie Church, Google Canada’s head of communications and public affairs, told the Post: “We will work co-operatively with the Competition Bureau to answer any questions they may have.”

The Canadian Competition Bureau administers and enforces Canada’s Competition Act, among other laws. Among the types of behaviour it investigates are abuse of a dominant position involving anti-competitive practices that “substantially lessen competition in the market, or are likely to do so”.

Google’s search engine is by far and away the dominant player in Canada. According to StatCounter data for April 2012 to 2013 Google’s share has declined over the past year but only very marginally, from more than 90% last year to just under 90% in April this year. The second largest search engine, Microsoft’s Bing, took less than 7% of the market in April 2013.

Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com's insight:

I'm sure the Canadian government can find better ways to spend my tax dollars.

Canadians use Google because it's "top of mind" and it works. If it didn't they would look at other search engines.

Maybe the government should look at how Google provides a great user experience, they may learn something.
