We all know by now that content marketing is a powerful tool and more and more marketers are using it these days to connect with their users. In fact, 98% of marketers surveyed now say content marketing is core to their marketing strategies.

Content Marketing can be a cost effective way to tell your story while engaging your audience at the same time. According to the Content Marketing Institute 69% of marketers are creating more content than a year ago. That’s a lot of new content!

Marketers are constantly coming up with new strategies to build their brands and reach new users, and content marketing is a great option. Creating compelling content for your marketing campaigns can be very challenging, but if marketers can quickly adapt to the constantly changing and complex solutions and platform out there, they can stay ahead of their competition.

A report by JWT's marketing intelligence unit has predicted 100 marketing trends to watch in the coming year.

The company has a good track record of picking trends in the media and marketing field, with some of this year's things to watch being good thought-starters for the media and advertising industries.

The study predicts the end of anonymity, as many consumers accept that their habits will be tracked, but that there will also be a backlash against this trend with 'Privacy by Design' becoming an important consideration for savvy consumers. Radio companies intereacting with their audiences online and through apps should monitor and review their privacy policies in light of changing trends in their area.

New research from consumer psychologist Lisa Cavanaugh, assistant professor at the USC Marshall School of Business, reveals how the prevalent marketing practice of highlighting relationships in advertising and promotions can have substantial negative consequences for sales and consumers' willingness to indulge themselves. Cavanaugh's research is presented in "Because I (Don't) Deserve It: How Relationship Reminders and Deservingness Influence Consumer Indulgence," forthcoming in the Journal of Marketing Research.

Here are some trends and developments to expect over the next twelve months:

Google will have to acquire to catch up as quickly as possible. Gobbling up Netflix, Spotify, or doing a huge NFL licensing deal are all in play. But the legacy TV players are the incumbents with sports leagues, so don’t expect them to loosen their grip on these licensing deals anytime soon. As well, the professional sports leagues are benefiting from this war and will continue to get richer. As the pipe dealers, they will try to protect their golden goose and ironically act more like the Amazon and Apples of the world.

The CEO of U.K.-based Powa Technologies says he has 1,200 brands in North America, Western Europe and South Africa poised to use his PowaTags in ads starting this summer. The tags are QR-code-like images embedded on magazine, outdoor or in-store ads (or inaudible audio signals in TV and radio ads) accessed by mobile apps that instantly place advertised items in shopping carts for checkout.

Dixons, Habitat and Topps Tiles are experimenting with new shop formats to help prevent ‘showrooming’ and figures suggest it is working.

 

The efforts of bricks-and-mortar stores to prevent people ‘showrooming’ seem to be paying off. In the past year, “significantly less” money has been spent by customers who go in-store to try or test a product and then purchase the item online, often at a cheaper price, according to an IBM study.

A level playing field in terms of price across all channels has helped but this success is as much about experience as cost. Retailers are conscious of the ease with which customers can shop wherever and whenever they want. Brands are therefore going to great lengths to ensure people can shop how they want; in IBM’s words, they are beginning to do a better job of integrating their online and offline services.

 

“The multichannel experience is a key approach for the industry,” explains Chris Bright, head of design at Dixons Retail, where 82 per cent of customers go online and in store as part of their journey. “We want that journey to be seamless and the wrap-around for that whole multichannel experience is the store environment.” 

So how are brands changing the format of their stores to provide the seamless multichannel experience demanded by customers? Can these changes bring people back to the high street to experience the ‘retail theatre’ of being in-store? And what role could technology play in enhancing the in-store shopping experience?

Sometimes the gift of giving truly is the greatest gift of all. That's the case for airline WestJet, that put together a feel-good Christmas-themed video which ended up earning them more than 27 million views on YouTube.

In the now-viral video, titled "Christmas Miracle," the folks at WestJet placed life-sized screens featuring Santa Claus in Toronto Pearson International Airport and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport to ask those flying on the airline from what they want for Christmas. Responses ranged from socks and underwear to a train set to a big-screen TV. Little did the passengers know that they would actually be receiving their requests.

In the time between the flights taking off and landing, some 150 WestJet employees hustled to stores like Best Buy to purchase the gifts, wrapped them and then cleared them through airport security. They then prepared hot chocolate at baggage claim as the 250 passengers waited for their luggage to arrive.

As wrapped and labeled gifts headed down the baggage claim shoot instead of suitcases, responses from the passengers ranged from laughter to "No way!" to tears. And though items like the flat screen TV seem expensive, WestJet vice president of communications Richard Bartremtells Forbes that making this video was actually surprisingly cheap.

"For a traditional commercial, you could spend well into the mid-six figures for the production alone," he says, adding that this commercial cost "a mere fraction" of that. Sometimes the gift of good will can be the best one of all.

Snapchat, Instagram video and Vine let people create video to share short snippets of their lives with friends and followers. But when brands become involved it could open them up to both risks and rewards. Although marketers are used to short advertising spots on TV, is this new trend towards instant marketing - content lasting less than 15 seconds delivered via social media and mobile - worth it to get the message across?

Snapchat has been surrounded by negative press as people have used it to send explicit imagery. Users send pictures via mobile that can appear from between one to 10 seconds then disappear from the recipients’ phones once opened, although people can screen grab images if they are fast enough.
