SEO vs. SEM Timelines: A Medical Analogy

SEO vs. SEM Timelines: A Medical Analogy | Marketing Strategy | Scoop.it
How do you explain to your boss or client how SEO works and when to expect results? Use this doctors and medication analogy to help them realize the time and effort it takes to run a successful SEO campaign and avoid being inundated with questions.
Mollie Durbin's insight:

I love this look at SEO vs. SEM in terms of a medical analogy. SEO is a long-term strategy, and SEM has more of an immediate effect. In some ways, paid advertising can boost organic efforts/rankings (at least initially) in addition to providing immediate lead results, but you ultimately win by optimizing and reducing spend per lead as you get better across the board.

Facebook Ad Prices Are Rising Amid Organic Reach Squeeze

Facebook Ad Prices Are Rising Amid Organic Reach Squeeze | Marketing Strategy | Scoop.it
It turns out that, far from fleeing Facebook, brands are willing to pay more to advertise on the social network after their pages started reaching fewer fans with unpaid posts. Indeed, Facebook ad prices have increased following the recent outcry over diminished “organic reach,” according to industry analysts and marketing experts.
Mollie Durbin's insight:

This has been out for a while, but I still hear people asking about organic reach on Facebook. Personally, I've had good results when advertising on Facebook; you can target ads to a high degree, which can make it very cost-effective. Truthfully, I might not have tried it if organic hadn't dropped off so sharply. It shouldn't come as a shock that Facebook is squeezing organic and forcing advertisers into the pipeline, but it's not all bad.

Mollie Durbin's insight:

In my experience, finding and keeping true digital marketing talent is a huge challenge. If you've found people with great skills, or with great potential, do what you can to keep them and train them, but have a plan in place for recruiting more great talent if they get hired away.

Marketing: The Corporate World's Least-Happy Function

Marketing: The Corporate World's Least-Happy Function | Marketing Strategy | Scoop.it
Take a look at the data below and spot the alarming trend.  These “intent to stay” trends are from CEB’s longitudinal study of employee engagement.  We’ve been running this study for over a decade, surveying tens of thousands of workers.  “Intent to stay” is an indicator of how happy and [...]
Mollie Durbin's insight:

"The “Always On” marketing environment—24/7 conversation management, 1:1 marketing, in-the-moment content creation—is wearing down our people.  It’s not scalable.  At least not the way most marketing teams are attacking it today."

There's truth to the fact that marketers must have a scalable system in order to keep pace with the dramatic changes that continue to shape the digital and traditional landscapes. That system is more than a digital platform - it has to be a whole philosophy of marketing, and those who get it right will win big without running their best people into the ground.

Mollie Durbin's insight:

As a consumer, this kind of real-world activity tracking bothers me. As a marketer, I can't deny the effectiveness of tailoring a consumer's shopping experience based on their behaviors. Is there a middle ground that's beneficial both for businesses and consumers?

Digital Distress: Quants Are Taking Over, and People Are Freaking Out

Digital Distress: Quants Are Taking Over, and People Are Freaking Out | Marketing Strategy | Scoop.it
If you want to stay in marketing, you need to totally "reinvent" yourself. Who doesn't love being told that?
Mollie Durbin's insight:

"Adobe does an annual survey of 6,000 customers to see how well they are performing. Turns out the ones that really dive head-on into digital marketing are kicking butt, and not by a little."

I had a great boss who said "you live by the numbers, you die by the numbers." It's true, and if you're diving into the digital marketing world (and you SHOULD), you can't do it halfway. You also can't do it without incorporating heavyweight measurement/stats into everything you do.
