Despite millions of users, apps are not a surefire moneymaker for cautious studios.


SUMMARY: Characters gleaned from mobile applications could start showing up on television and in films, although studios have so far moved cautiously into the arena. Outfit7, maker of the popular "Talking Friends" cartoon animal apps, has begun talks with studios to incorporate its characters into content. "The studio system is waking up to the power of mobile as a form of franchise creation -- that the next Shrek or Mickey Mouse could start as an app," said Andy Mooney, a former Disney executive who is advising "Talking Friends."
