On Friday, the American discount retailer confirmed that hackers stole PIN data during the breach that affected millions of Target customers in November and December. The thieves also made off with more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers, which they’re reportedly unloading in underground markets.

In chapter 12 we looked at what Big Data is and what it can do for a firm. Data collection can help create a competitive advantage in an industry. Real goal is turn data into information. Target collects this data by what the consumers purchases especially through credit card purchases. But what happens when this information is breached? Target as mentioned in the book is going through a lawsuit, it  also damaged its brands, and consumer confidence has gone down. All of this at the end has caused target sales and litigation costs.
