Back in the 1990s, I worked for a small software reseller who learned this lesson the really hard way.

 

The husband and wife opened the business out of their garage.  Their first year, they made $20k; the second year, $2 million.

 

The difference was they applied for, and won, a contract with a large aerospace company.  That contract was worth $2 million a year.

 

With that kind of income, they came to believe that they knew what they were doing when it came to managing their business.

 

But they didn't.

 

A scant two years later, that contract wasn't renewed and their business went under.

 

They had never learned how to do marketing or enroll new clients.  The $2 million contract protected them from facing this reality until it was too late.

 

Diversification is the KEY to weathering the ups and downs that will inevitably hit your business.
