Carphone Warehouse advert banned by Advertising Standards Authority - Retail Gazette

Mobile retailer the Carphone Warehouse has been forced to retract an advert about their monthly 4G tariffs due to them being “misleading”. The advert states they have the “UK’s lowest price, we check so you don’t have to”. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have claimed the small print contradicts this statement and that it could not be substantiated. An advert for painkiller tablets Nurofen has been banned for falsely claiming it could target specific types of pain. The Advertising Standards Authority  made the ruling following complaints about television adverts broadcast by the company in the UK. They showed a woman enjoying her day without experiencing any pain, while symbol at her back suggested that Nurofen was acting there to eliminate back pain. An accompanying voiceover said: “Just a single dose of Nurofen Joint and Back provides you with constant targeted pain relief for up to eight hours.”

A television advertising campaign for the cleaning product Cillit Bang has been banned in Spain after authorities ruled that its female-only cast led to the suggestion that only women were responsible for housework. Three adverts for the cleaning product, which is made by the FTSE-listed Reckitt Benckiser and is used in households around the world, showed 32 ostensibly ordinary women cleaning and wiping their homes.

Adverts describing Special K cereal as “full of goodness” and “nutritious” have been banned in the UK, after the advertising watchdog found the claims could not be adequately backed up. Kellogg’s ran a TV advert for the cereal, in which it was described as a “five grain super porridge full of goodness” and “a nutritious start to your day.” However, the Advertising Standards Agency has ruled the claims have not been backed up by evidence of a specific health benefit for consumers and the adverts therefore cannot continue to appear in their current format.
