Do you agree with Nielsen's selections? The criteria: the year's most memorable new commercials leveraged certain principles that generally boost memorability: the use of emotion to create connections; the inclusion of "attention-grabbing sights and sounds;" and consistency in creative style.

I love the branded integrations.

Success: the stories you tell yourself decide yours | Marketing and Creative Services | Scoop.it

"Your identity story is your own epic saga. Quite literally the tale of who you are and where you are going. It’s the way you make meaning out of the ocean of chaos we call life.  Stories are the subatomic particles of the self. They are the keys to changing everything.

How to instantly identify toxic narratives.  Start getting very real with yourself, about the stories you’re telling yourself. Here’s a huge hint: They are also the stories you tell others to explain yourself."

Why Super Bowl commercials may be a waste of money

Why Super Bowl commercials may be a waste of money | Marketing and Creative Services | Scoop.it
The Super Bowl is commanding a record $4 million per ad spot, but a study claims only 1 in 5 ads is effective at triggering purchases
Wendy Flanagan's insight:

Nice media coverage for Tim Calkins - but referring to the original article in AdAge http://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/study-80-super-bowl-ads-sales/290907/ opens more questions with regards to the quality of creative and marketing skills, not necessarily the price tag of the #NFL #Superbowl ad.

Lasting brand impact, retention and resonance is driven by the creative presentation and makes a difference in brand value. Failures occur when the final commercial does not deliver the brand personality traits (focusing on entertainment, regardless of mismatch to brand persona).

The definition of worth must be extended to a broader #brand strategy - if incremental increases in sales cause a competitor to lose revenue to the detriment of business overall, the ad may well be worth its purchase price even if immediate direct sales don't justify the purchase. Focus on immediacy of ROI is misleading.

Additionally, the companies #advertising are publicly traded companies. The study doesn't take into consideration what happens to stock prices based on the ads' influence on market perception.

Finally, being associated with #NFL #Superbowl via #advertising imparts an additional layer of brand values to a brand's persona - absorbing the attributes of passion, strength and #American #branding integral to the NFL brand.

Just as conversations continue about the Superbowl itself for years after, so too do conversation about the ads that are truly spectacular creative and marketing pieces. Not all the ads are winners... it's a competition for #mindshare of the American public.

Final Week of Online Holiday Shopping Fails to Meet Expectations

Final Week of Online Holiday Shopping Fails to Meet Expectations | Marketing and Creative Services | Scoop.it
E-commerce had been a bright spot this holiday season, but it got a little dimmer as the season drew to a close, says comScore. After posting strong year-over-year growth
Wendy Flanagan's insight:

IBM says that mobile accounted for 48% of all online traffic on Christmas Day. (Was everyone visiting someone, Googling directions, or just ignoring family and friends in person in order to communicate with online family and friends?)

Did you try to make a purchase via mobile on Christmas Day? Did you succeed or fail? I tried with Lands End and failed. The email promotion featured something specific, but when I clicked, it took me to a broader selection of content. After trying to find the item I failed and gave up. The site wasn't mobile enabled and it was just too difficult to navigate. Sad for Lands End since mobile neared 29% of online sales  Christmas Day (according to IBM).

The Traps of ‘optimizing’ by Lead Source

The Traps of ‘optimizing’ by Lead Source | Marketing and Creative Services | Scoop.it
Don't fall into the trap of optimizing by Lead Source by Cost Per Lead. Look more broadly across the output to have the full picture.
Wendy Flanagan's insight:

This is a widespread issue. Focusing on the least expensive lead sources can leave more expensive, and better converting sources overlooked.

Also, what is the duration of a customer culled from one channel vs another? For example: Web hosting companies selling B2B and B2C might find consumers drop more rapidly as the hosting environment is too technical to navigate, or fill call center lines requiring rapid scaling (operational expense) to handle volume.

Additionally, constant honing to the least expensive lead source can overlook changing audience behaviors (i.e.: Leads came from Facebook this week, Instagram the next).

Finally, true cost of lead is often not assessed in terms of internal resources (salary and time allocation) when compared to outsourced services. For example: What volume of marketing materials does the internal team produce and how effective is it vs utilizing an agency for the same materials?
