For two weeks in December 2013, ShareBloc ran a contest to find the Top Content Marketing Posts of 2013. Social Media Today received a lion’s share of winners, with two posts in the top 10, including the #1 post.
Do you agree with Nielsen's selections? The criteria: the year's most memorable new commercials leveraged certain principles that generally boost memorability: the use of emotion to create connections; the inclusion of "attention-grabbing sights and sounds;" and consistency in creative style.
"Your identity story is your own epic saga. Quite literally the tale of who you are and where you are going. It’s the way you make meaning out of the ocean of chaos we call life. Stories are the subatomic particles of the self. They are the keys to changing everything.

With New Year's resolutions making rounds - I like this approach for corporate and personal goals.
In scientific research on what makes articles go viral, amusing stories were shared more frequently than less amusing ones.
Berger and Milkman found that two features predictably determined an article’s success: how positive its message was and how much it excited its reader.
While emotion and arousal top the list, a few additional factors seem to make a big difference. First, he told me, you need to create social currency—something that makes people feel that they’re not only smart but in the know.
The presence of a memory-inducing trigger is also important. We share what we’re thinking about—and we think about the things we can remember.
Lists also get shared because of another feature that Berger often finds successful: the promise of practical value.
A final predictor of success is the quality of the story itself. “People love stories. The more you see your story as part of a broader narrative, the better,” Berger says.
Lasting brand impact, retention and resonance is driven by the creative presentation and makes a difference in brand value. Failures occur when the final commercial does not deliver the brand personality traits (focusing on entertainment, regardless of mismatch to brand persona).
The definition of worth must be extended to a broader #brand strategy - if incremental increases in sales cause a competitor to lose revenue to the detriment of business overall, the ad may well be worth its purchase price even if immediate direct sales don't justify the purchase. Focus on immediacy of ROI is misleading.
Additionally, the companies #advertising are publicly traded companies. The study doesn't take into consideration what happens to stock prices based on the ads' influence on market perception.
Finally, being associated with #NFL #Superbowl via #advertising imparts an additional layer of brand values to a brand's persona - absorbing the attributes of passion, strength and #American #branding integral to the NFL brand.
Just as conversations continue about the Superbowl itself for years after, so too do conversation about the ads that are truly spectacular creative and marketing pieces. Not all the ads are winners... it's a competition for #mindshare of the American public.

Wendy Flanagan's insight:
IBM says that mobile accounted for 48% of all online traffic on Christmas Day. (Was everyone visiting someone, Googling directions, or just ignoring family and friends in person in order to communicate with online family and friends?)
Did you try to make a purchase via mobile on Christmas Day? Did you succeed or fail? I tried with Lands End and failed. The email promotion featured something specific, but when I clicked, it took me to a broader selection of content. After trying to find the item I failed and gave up. The site wasn't mobile enabled and it was just too difficult to navigate. Sad for Lands End since mobile neared 29% of online sales Christmas Day (according to IBM).
