Not everyone is lucky enough to work with a huge team of marketers, and those people also happen to not be lucky enough to get more hours added to their day!

This list contains some great tools to keep your content marketing lean when you're working with limited resources. My personal favorite is Canva. I love using that to create quick & dirty graphics.

I'd also add Skitch & Trello. Skitch is a great screenshotting tool that you can install for Mac and use to mark up images with arrows, text, circles, etc. Trello is  another one that I can't live without. I'm on a content marketing team of two and we use Trello to manage our strategy in a lean way; keeping track of ideas, what's in progress, and what's been completed.

If you're an SMB or part of a #leancontent marketing team, join us on Facebook to talk content strategy with a lean mindset.

The Power of Visual in Biz Storytelling

The Power of Visual in Biz Storytelling | marketing and content creation | Scoop.it

Forget about “show, don’t tell.” These days it’s show and tell. And this holds ever more relevant when it comes to creating a compelling brand story. The power of visual is simply encoded in our genes. We process visual information incomparably faster than impressions from other senses and we retain it for much longer periods …

Karen Dietz's curator insight, September 9, 1:20 PM

This is a quick article with some great reminders about the power of imagery in storytelling -- and a few additional insights on how visuals can immediately connect with/activate emotions.

Of course, all effective storytelling is based on the storyteller being able to transmit/spark images in the listener's brain. Oral storytellers have been doing this successfully for 100,000+ years.

Today we also have widespread abilities to add photographs and other visual elements to our storytelling that occurs in a wide variety of media. And it is important to leverage this kind of digital work as stories show up in all kinds of different forms.

The 6.30 minute TED video shared in the post is a must watch for explaining how the brain works with visual images and creates meaning.

I really like the point made in the article about how visual also means social. In other words, bringing photos and images into your digital stories promotes sharing.

I don't necessarily agree that visuals are required because of shortened attention spans. But I do agree that visuals can entice people into a story.

The folks from Edgar (Damjan Obal, Marusa Novak), a European branding agency, wrote this piece. They've won a number of awards in Europe, and included a couple of examples of their brand storytelling. Watch them -- they are good -- but are they really stories? Let me know what you think!

The Psychology of Color in Marketing and Branding via HuffPost

The Psychology of Color in Marketing and Branding via HuffPost | marketing and content creation | Scoop.it

Marty Note
Great HuffPost roundup of several important infographics and psychology of color studies. Which ones surprised you? Problem is every website wants ALL of those emotions, but not all at once (lol). Key is picking right color for right content / place on your site.

RED may SUCK as a homepage because it chases people away, but red could ROCK as an accent. Red "buy" buttons have only been beat ONE TIME in thousands of tests we've run. So find the right color conversation and have it at the right time.

At Curagami (http://www.Curagami.com) we think of colors as ways to help tell stories. We try to "match the hatch" of the story we are telling to colors in our images or within supporting graphics such as icons or widgets.

When our story is EXCITING we like RED or variations of it. We may also isolate the red by using black and white. Isolating red makes its power SHOUT in just the right minimal way sometimes. Too much red makes you want to RELAX so we may follow a RED with a soothing green or blue.

Websites are hub and spoke so it van be impossible to map stories to color in sequence. BUT if you match the PAGE to your colors you can win and be sure to daisy chain content telling the same story with enough similar colors and scenttrail to create a sense of connection. If you tell a GREEN story and suddenly smack your readers with too much red they RUN.

Win the page, link the page and win the psychology of color battle in your web design.

And YES I'm breaking my Big Blogs curation rule for the 3rd time in a day (lol). Soon as you state a stupid rule like that you break it and that is a definite RULE (lol). M

6 free visual marketing tools

This lack of artistic ability poses a threat to my marketing career, especially now that visual content marketing is the ticket to success. Even though I have other creative traits, I'm worried I'll get left in the visual storytelling dust.

I know I'm not alone.

Luckily, we non-artists have a few tools to mask our lack of design talent.

These tools are free, but often have advanced paid features for when you're ready to step up your game. They don't replace a designer's expertise, but you can use them for smaller projects, like blogs, social media graphics, or Slideshare templates....
