Twitter Can Be Used To Predict Crime [STUDY]

Twitter Can Be Used To Predict Crime [STUDY] | Marketing & Advertising | Scoop.it

Anything you tweet can and will be used against you in a court of law. At least, that’s what a new study proposes.

As Business Insider reports, researchers from the University of Virginia discovered that tweets can be used to predict certain types of crimes.

By analysing geo-located tweets, these researchers found that tweet were useful in predicting between 19 to 25 different types of crimes, including stalking, theft and assault.

Lead researcher, Matthew Gerber, says that people aren’t necessarily tweeting about crimes directly. Instead, they’re tweeting about environmental factors that could lead to a crime – such as a large group of people tweeting about getting drunk, a situation that could lead to crime.

By exploring geo-tagged tweets from Chicago neighborhoods and comparing these to the city’s crime database, the researchers were able to predict crime in the future. As the study explains:

Here’s the thing: the internet never sleeps.

Which means data never sleeps, and the internet sure likes to use up a lot of it. How much? In any given minute, 277,000 tweets are published on Twitter, 216,000 photos are sent to Instagram and 8,333 videos are shared on Vine.

And we’re just getting started. Over that same 60 second period, 347,222 photos are sent on WhatsApp, 416,667 swipes are made on Tinder and 3,472 images are pinned on Pinterest.

And if you think that’s impressive, Google receives 4 millions search queries, Facebook users share 2.46 million pieces of content and 204 million email messages are sent each and every minute of the day.

A recent article in The Economist quotes Bill Gates as saying at least a dozen job types will be taken over by robots and automation in the next two decades, and these jobs cover both high-paying and low-skilled workers. Some of the positions he mentioned were commercial pilots, legal work, technical writing, telemarketers, accountants, retail workers, and real estate sales agents.

Indeed, as I’ve predicted before, by 2030 over 2 billion jobs will disappear. Again, this is not a doom and gloom prediction, rather a wakeup call for the world.

Those are just some of the dozen distinct personalities revealed by a research project investigating the extent of the influence of social media in people’s lives.

The survey, conducted by online bank First Direct, found that social media, and the technology we use to access it, could be changing our personalities in quite fundamental ways as some of us exhibit traits very different on social networks to those that we have in the real world.

Dr David Giles, a reader in media psychology at Winchester University, who helped analyse the findings said that mobile devices in particularly have had a big impact not just on the amount of time we spend using social networks but on our personalities.
