Podcasting A to Z Review An Insider’s Perspective From A Recent Graduate

Podcasting A to Z Review An Insider’s Perspective From A Recent Graduate | Marketing Access Pass | Scoop.it
Podcasting A to Z Review Complete review from a recent graduate. Learn about the lessons I learned. What to expect, how to make the most from Podcasting A to Z
Anthony Tran's insight:

Are you looking to get started with podcasting but don’t know where to start? Want to grow an audience using audio media but don’t know how? I had the same questions and concerns until I found Cliff Ravenscraft “Podcasting A to Z” course. I will share with you my experience and lessons learned. Here is my complete Podcasting A to Z review.

What is Podcasting A to Z?

So you’re probably wondering what exactly is Podcasting A to Z. The name of the course really sums it up. It’s a complete podcast training course from beginning to end. However, this course was much different from online courses that I have purchased in the past because it was more like a virtual classroom versus an online digital product course.

Other courses I have purchased were just pre-recorded video tutorials that you would watch at your own pace. But, Podcasting A to Z is a 4-week course that has a limited availability of 28 spots per session. Thus, if the course gets filled up you would have to wait until the next class becomes available.

Cliff Ravenscraft is an actual live instructor who is available for questions throughout your 4 weeks of training. This is a unique platform because just like an online class that you take from a University you can email the instructor and they provide a timely response. There is definitely more to this course, which I cover more in detail below.

Why I Decided to Join Podcasting A to Z

Just like you, I wanted to learn the basics of podcasting. I didn’t have any technical knowledge about audio equipment and how to set it up. I tried to research some stuff online, but honestly it was all very overwhelming.

I wanted to create a podcast show to help promote my website and connect with my audience. I also knew that the podcast could help me build some valuable relationships with other marketers in my industry.

I had a lofty goal of launching my online business in 4 months which included a website, membership area and a podcast show. Thus, I didn’t have a lot of time to waste to figure out everything I needed to know regarding podcasting.

I had first learned about Cliff Ravenscraft, “The Podcast Answer Man” from Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income. I have been listening to Cliff’s show for the past year and I noticed that his audio quality and production sound was top-notch.

Audio quality was an important criteria that I had for my business model because not only was I planning on creating a Podcast Show, but I was also going to be recording videos screenshots for my tutorials. I knew that bad sound quality could deter people from listening to my podcast and watching my video tutorials.

What Was I Expecting to Get Out of Podcasting A to Z

My initial expectations were very high because of how expensive the course was. However, I had a mindset shift and thought to myself that this is not an “expense” but rather an “investment” in my business and education. Once I realized that this course was an investment and a necessity to build my online business, there was no question that I had made the right decision.

I was definitely expecting to learn the technical side of podcasting, from equipment setup, and how to use the software that is required. I knew that the course would require a lot of my attention because I would be watching some video tutorials and trying to digest all this new information.

But, what I actually learned from this course far exceeded my expectations. Let me explain…

What I Learned From Podcasting A to Z

How to Choose a Podcast Topic – Cliff began this course by helping me think about my podcast and business in detail. He asked some really tough questions that had me really deep dive into my business model.

How to Choose the Right Podcast Name – A name is one of the first things that people notice when searching for a podcast show to listen to. Cliff critiqued my podcast name and offered suggestions to help me select the right one.

Guidance on Length of Time and Frequency of Delivery – This topic had me thinking a lot because I wasn’t sure if I should create a daily show, or a show once a week. I didn’t know how long my show should be as well. 30 minutes? 45-minutes? 1-hour? Cliff offered his opinion and gave me some pros and cons of each situation.

How to Choose the Best Show Format – There are different ways to host a Podcast Show. Some shows are in solo format where the recording is one person narrating. You can also have an interview format, or co-host format. There are a lot of different ways you can format your show. Cliff explains how to produce and record on each of these formats. I decided to do an interview show for my podcast.

Record Live versus Pre-Recorded Shows – Cliff shares his insight on having a live show versus a pre-recorded show production. I decided to do a pre-recorded show format just in case I needed to edit some mistakes out.

How to Choose the Right Podcasting Equipment – I learned a great deal from this tutorial because there are a lot of different equipment options available. I learned about all the different microphones, mixers, digital recording devices, audio cables, headphones, etc. I had a lot of options to choose from. Cliff provided some examples of inexpensive equipment to more premium ones. This was helpful because I learned that I could podcast on a budget.

How to Setup Audio Equipment – These tutorials were super valuable because Cliff explains all the technical details in a language that was easy for me to understand. I was able to watch the step-by-step tutorials and finish setting up my equipment in only 1 day.

Podcasting Editing Software – I learned about all the various editing software that is available in the marketplace. Cliff shared some options of free tools, to paid ones. I was able to select the best software that was available for my Apple computer platform.

Podcast Mp3 Hosting Solutions – If I didn’t take this course, I wouldn’t have known that I needed to host my audio files on another server. I learned what hosting site to use and how to set it all up.

How to Integrate and Configure an Audio Player on a Website – This course was also very valuable because I wanted to share my Podcast episodes on my blog so that I can post my show notes. I learned what WordPress plugin to use and how to set it up.

How to Submit Podcast to iTunes, Zune, Blackberry, and Stitcher Directories – This process was explained step-by-step so that I could get maximum exposure of my show on multiple platforms.

Tips on How to Record a Podcast Show – Cliff shared a checklist of things to do to make sure I had a good podcast show. This information saved me a lot of time and headache.

How to Add Sound Clips – I really enjoyed learning how to do this because adding sound clips can provide entertainment for my podcast show. I also learned how to integrate sound clips while recording and edit them in post-production.

Complete Production Workflow – Cliff has recorded over 3,000 podcast shows and he provided his exact blueprint of his production workflow. This was truly valuable and priceless.

How to Promote A Show – Just like in online media you need traffic. I learned some tips and tactics on how to build an audience and spread the word about my show.

What I Liked About Podcasting A to Z

I wanted to share with you some things that I really enjoyed about this course.

Podcasting Business Plan – Before I started the course, Cliff sent me an email with the subject line “Before You Record Your First Episode Business Plan” In this business plan he asked me to answer 12 Questions. For example, “Why do you want to podcast? What purpose will this podcast serve?” As mentioned before, I believe this really helped me re-evaluate my “WHY” and understand how I plan to serve my audience. Without this critical question I wouldn’t have had a clear direction on what I wanted to achieve with my podcast.

Business and Marketing Strategy – Cliff doesn’t just talk about just the technical side of podcasting. He offered strategic advise on how to identify my target audience. I expected that this would be a technical course, but I didn’t expect that this course would teach me business and marketing strategies.

Course Curriculum Setup – I really liked how this class was divided up. The first week I got a “Foundation” training. I learned about equipment, artwork, music options, etc. The 2nd week I learned about Equipment setup. The 3rd week I learned about Production. The 4th week I learned about Promotion. I also liked the fact that I only received one week’s worth of information at a time. This helped me stay focused and not get overwhelmed.

Basecamp Discussion Forum – The Podcasting A to Z course is hosted on the Basecamp platform. Basecamp was easy to navigate and it kept a log of all the discussion threads for each student. This was neat because I could read other students questions and answers. I was also able join in on their discussions and provide my feedback. Students asked the class for feedback about logo designs, music selection, and show format ideas. I downloaded the Basecamp mobile App to my iPhone so I was able to participate in the classroom discussions even when I was away from my computer.

Personal Questions Answered – I had some trouble with setting up my audio equipment. Cliff sent me pictures and diagrams with clear instructions to help with my particular problem. He also took the time to record step-by-step videos to help me troubleshoot. I was truly amazed at the level of attention that I received. What is truly remarkable is he did this for all his students.

Live Tapings of Podcast Answer Man – As a student I was able to watch a live streaming show of Podcast Answer Man. I got a special invitation to watch him in his home studio and literally click, talk, record, edit, etc. I must say he makes it look very easy.

Downloadable Training Material – Throughout the course there were PDF, and audio files available for me to download. This proved helpful because sometimes I wanted to just access one diagram. Instead of me watching the video training, I was able to download the slides and find the exact picture diagram that I needed reference to.

Access to other Digital Tutorials – At the end of the course I got access to the entire library of video tutorials offered at PodcastAnswerMan.com. Here is an example of some of them:

  • Overview of Podcasting
  • Audio Mixer Basics
  • WordPress for Podcasters
  • Adobe Audition 101
  • Social Media 101
  • Evaluating Your Podcast Checklist
  • Passive income strategies for Podcasting
  • MDX 4600 Compressor/Limiter/Gate Tutorial

Network With Other Entrepreneurs – One of the things that I really enjoyed about this course was the ability to meet and connect with like-minded individuals. I made some great friendships with other classmates. Some of which I still speak to on a weekly basis even after the course ended.

Unlimited Access for 30 Days with Cliff – I was able to email Cliff directly and he responded to all my questions. Even though it was a Podcasting Course, I was able to ask some questions regarding social media, blogging, and marketing and Cliff would provide his professional opinion and insight.

Course Material Was Updated and Current – All the training videos were current and constantly being updated. Online Media is constantly changing and some of the training videos were outdated. Cliff made sure all videos were current and recorded new tutorials and uploaded them while I was taking the course.

Podcasting A to Z Private Facebook Group for Alumni – After the course ended I was invited to join a private community of past A to Z alumni. There are currently 135 members and growing each month. There is a wealth of knowledge in this community.

Unlimited Access to Material After Course – When the course ended I was still able to access all the training material. To this day, I still reference a lot of the training videos and discussion threads.

Cliff Supports His Students and Alumni – One of the things I really liked about this course is the continued support that Cliff provides to his students and Alumni. I often times see Facebook postings from Cliff announcing about his A to Z student new shows.

What I Disliked About Podcasting A to Z

Like any good review you have to share some things that you did not like.

The Course Ended After 4 Weeks – “All good things must come to an end” I really enjoyed the class and was truly sad when it ended. The classroom synergy was great and I had learned a lot from Cliff and my other classmates. I wish that the class was longer for my own selfish reasons.

More Time to Participate with Other Students – The 4 week course went by really fast. I wanted to be more involved in the discussion threads with my classmates, but I simply ran out of time. There was a lot to do because I was busy watching video tutorials and trying to setup my own podcast show.

Advice for New Students

Make Time for this Course – Make sure you are ready to devote some serious time into this course. I would block out 4 weeks of any distractions or obligations. For the 4 weeks while I was in A to Z, I explained to my family that I wanted to take full advantage of the learning experience so I didn’t make any plans on the weekends so that I could review the material.

Build Relationships with Other Classmates – Make every opportunity to connect with other classmates. As mentioned before, I have met some amazing entrepreneurs like “Dwayne Brown” who I mastermind with on a weekly basis and have collaborated with on some special projects. This is truly priceless.

Don’t Buy Equipment Before Class – I made the mistake of purchasing my equipment before class started because I was so eager to start. I would suggest waiting to buy any equipment until you watch the tutorials about various equipment options. I have some equipment that far exceed my requirements and thus I could have saved some money

Do Research Before Buying Equipment – I spent a lot of time driving back forth to Guitar Center because I purchased the wrong audio cables, or microphone jacks. Like I mentioned, I suggest waiting to buy equipment until you learn more about it through the A to Z course.

Suggest Having An Existing Website – I started Podcasting A to Z course before I had a website created. If I could have done it over again I would have created my website first so that I could launch my podcast at the end of the course. In my opinion its pointless to create a podcast show if you have no website to direct them to. As a result, I had to wait until my website was finished before I could launch my show.

Starting an Online Business? Top 5 Questions to Answer Before

Starting an Online Business? Top 5 Questions to Answer Before | Marketing Access Pass | Scoop.it
Starting an Online Business? Don't the make the same mistake. You should answer these top 5 questions before starting an online business.
Anthony Tran's insight:

Build a blog and watch the money roll-in right!?  Wrong!  Actually, it’s not quite that simple.  In fact, I know from experience that it is not that simple.  In this article I talk about the top 5 questions you have to answer before starting an online business.”

I’ve been building websites for the past 5 years and I “learned the hard way” that simply creating a blog with no purpose and strategy will not get you the results you’re looking for.  In fact, let me share with you some of my failed projects:

Networkcaptain.com – A network marketing lead generation training blog.  The first problem was, I wasn’t a network marketer and did not truly understand what they wanted and needed.  It was hard to talk to a target market when I didn’t know anything about them.

eReaderReview.com – I wanted to create a review site about eReaders.  The problem was I knew nothing about an eReader and didn’t even own one.  It was difficult to write a solid review about a topic that I knew nothing about.  Of course that project got nowhere.

StartOnlineClasses.com – This was an information website that was targeting students who wanted to take online classes.  This was a great niche and had lots of potential for Google Adsense money.  But, I wasn’t passionate about writing about online classes.  So of course I scrapped that project when I found myself sitting for hours starring at the computer trying to figure out what to write about.

Top 5 Questions Before Starting an Online Business1.  Why Do You Want to Start an Online Business?

Simon Sinek, a best-selling author of “Start with Why.”  He did an amazing TedTalk presentation about understanding your core motivation, essentially answering the question “Why?”  I have learned that starting an online business requires a deep understanding of your true motivations.  I started an online business because I wanted more time and flexibility to spend with my family.

Check out this video explaining more about “Starting with Your Why.”

2.  What Are You Passionate About?

I say that being passionate about your business is also highly important.  One of the greatest things about starting an online business is you have the ability to choose your topic or niche.  I say choose something that you love and are passionate about.  You will enjoy the process of building an online business more, and it will keep you going even if you’re not making any money at first.

3.  Who is Your Target Market?

Understand who you’re trying to serve.  When you define who your target market is, learn everything you can about them.  Do proper research about their geographic region, what they do, what their hobbies are, etc.  When you know who your target market is, it is easier to write content that speaks directly to them.

4.  What Problem Are You Trying to Solve?

After you have identified your target market, determine what problems they have.  Fundamentally, business starts with finding a problem and then providing a solution.  Just think about the next time you open your wallet and spend money.  What was the problem that you wanted to solve?

5.  How Can You Solve Their Problems?

After you have determined what your target audience’s problem is you can then create a product or service to help them.  If you provide them the right solution to their problems they will happily pay you for your products and services.  The better you serve your audience the better you will do in business.

I know that when starting an online business, most people get excited and they want to start with the technical stuff first.  For example, how to create a website or how to drive traffic with SEO, but really they need to start with mindset and really fine tune their business plan.

I know business planning and marketing strategy are not very glamorous topics to think about, but really this is where 80% of your success starts.  The remaining 20% is execution.  So before starting an online business please make sure you answer these top 5 questions.

A really good book that I recommend is called Guerilla Marketing Field Guide by Jay and Jeannie Levinson.

This was the exact book that I used to help develop my marketing strategy before creating Marketing Access Pass.

After spending the necessary time to really develop my ideas and business plan I was able to create my online business.  I was able to build a business that fulfills all of the top requirements:

I knew “Why” I decided to start this online business.

I am passionate about teaching people about Online Marketing and enjoy learning about the topic.

I have defined my Target Market, and his name is “Eddy.”

You can learn more about Eddy by watching this video.

Lastly, I created several products to offer solutions to “Eddy’s” problems as an online entrepreneur.

But, if I didn’t take the time to answer these 5 questions before starting an online business I would have been spinning my wheels again like I had done in the past with my other failed projects.

I hope that you take my advice to heart and take the time to answer these questions.  Please really fine tune your ideas and business plan before starting an online business.  I wish you much success!

Personal Story of How John Lee Dumas Became My Coach

Personal Story of How John Lee Dumas Became My Coach | Marketing Access Pass | Scoop.it
How John Lee Dumas became my coach. This is a personal story that I am about to share why mentoring is so powerful and why you should invest in coaching.
Anthony Tran's insight:

I often get asked in podcast interviews to share the story of how I met “John Lee Dumas.”  So I thought it would be appropriate for me to share the story on my blog.  Keep reading to the end as I explain why coaching is so important for you and your online business.  So here we go this is a true story…

While driving to work to my cubicle desk job at an Aerospace company I use to listen to Tony Robbins motivational CD’s in the car.  I remember Tony would always say “Success Leaves Clues”… I always remembered that quote, but I couldn’t figure how to apply it to my life.

Listening to Podcasts

One day I was listening to a podcast episode 77 of Smart Passive Income by Pat Flynn and his guest for the day was John Lee Dumas from Entrepreneur on Fire.  At the time, I heard some buzz about John Lee Dumas but I didn’t know much about his story.  While listening to this episode John shared his background.

I couldn’t help but feel that I knew the guy really well, because his story sounded exactly like mine.  We both went to college and got Military ROTC scholarships.  We were officers in the military and served in Iraq.  We both left the military in 2006 to join corporate America, but soon realized that the 9 to 5 grind was not for us.

The only difference was John had taken the entrepreneurial leap a year ago and I was yet to.  John has risen to the podcast rankings and creating an amazing brand with Entrepreneur on Fire.  Within 5 months of starting his business he already amassed an average of about 400,000 downloads per month and started making 5 figures a month.  I was amazed at how fast he grew his business and fan base.

My Aha Moment!

In this interview, John mentioned that one of the things that attributed to his success was when he hired Jaime Tardy, from Eventual Millionaire to be his mentor and coach for the first 90 days before his launch of his podcast and business.  At this moment, I had my “Aha” moment and knew that I had to meet John and wanted him to be my coach.

I started to do extensive research about John and quickly became a student of his work.  I purchased his Podcast Launch Ebook, and started listening to his podcast and reviewed his content on his website.  On his website, and podcast show he mentioned that he had a Mastermind Group called Fire Nation Elite.  I quickly signed up and scheduled my 15 minute chat with John. However, John was a busy guy and the next available appointment time was a week and half later.  So I waited patiently to speak to John.

The Phone Call

I remember the day very vividly.  It was a Saturday morning the weekend after Labor Day about 10:15am.  I received a call from John and was all fired up!  I shared with John a little about my story and background and he said, “Wow you sound just like me a year ago.”

I mentioned to him that I wanted to join Fire Nation Elite and contribute to the community.  John said, “Listen, I am only accepting a maximum of 100 people and I have about 96 right now so if you’re interested I suggest you sign up because I have another group of calls that I have to make this weekend and I know the slots are going to fill up.”  I had already made up my mind before the call that I was planning on joining, but the phone call really sealed the deal for me.

The Unexpected Email

John ended the call by saying, “I have another call scheduled right now and something just came up last minute… I’m going to email you something.”  Email me something?  I wasn’t sure exactly what he meant, but surely enough 5 minutes later I got an email from John.

The email basically said, “Heyo, this is totally last minute… A small group of Fire Nation people and myself are going to be having a BBQ in San Diego if you’re interested let me know and I will send you the address.”

I didn’t hesitate a bit, I replied immediately and said, “I’m there!”  I got dressed and jumped in my car to drive an hour a half to San Diego from Orange County, CA.
When I came down to San Diego I met so many amazing entrepreneurs from Fire Nation and I met John and Kate for the first time.  Both were so friendly and accommodating.

Coaching Backstory

I felt very much in my element talking about online marketing.  At that event, I had asked John about 1-on-1 coaching. John had hesitated and said, “I only take 4 mentees at a time because I am very busy. But, if you’re really interested I might have an opening in October which was about 3 weeks away.”

I knew that this would be a life changing relationship, but at the time I had no idea to the extent.  I just remembered John’s story of hiring Jaime Tardy and the words of Tony Robbins “Find a Mentor, Learn from Them, Duplicate their Process and You will Get Similar Results.”

The Kick-In the Pants

I got home that night and spoke to my wife and shared with her my excitement.  I had always planned to quit my job and pursue my dreams of starting an online business full-time but I just didn’t know when that time would be.  When I got home that night, my wife urged me… “Honey you need to quit your job now! What are you waiting for? This is your opportunity take advantage of it.”

This was exactly the kick in the pants that I needed and no joke… that Monday I put in my 2-weeks notice.  However, I wasn’t scared… I had been planning for this day for over 4 years.  I was ready and just waiting for the right moment.

John Lee Dumas Coaching

I started my coaching sessions with John as planned in October and I hired him for 3 months which was perfect for my timeline.  I wanted to launch my business on January 1, 2014 to be ready right before New Media Expo.

Just like a fitness instructor John held me accountable and pushed me when I was feeling down and spotted me when I needed help.  Each week I would have my 20-minute calls sharing with him my past week’s accomplishments and my game plan for the upcoming week.  I didn’t have time to be indecisive and I needed to stay focused.  There would be days when John would say, “You’re spending too much time on that, it’s good enough… move forward to the next project.” I was a bit of a perfectionist and so this was some good advice that I needed to stay on course with my schedule.

I was stuck one day because I was ready to hire a VA. I wanted to use Chris Ducker’s Virtual Staff Finder business but they were all booked up and weren’t taking any new customers for a couple weeks.  I sent an email to John asking for help and suggestions for other VA staffing companies.

No joke! The next day, I got a personal email from Chris Ducker’s team asking how they could help me with my VA requirements. Through John’s relationship I was able to get assistance that I could not have if I wasn’t his mentee.

After 90 days of coaching, I hit my target right on New Year’s Day launching my website.  Thanks to John’s accountability I was able to stay laser focused and accomplished more in 90 days then what normally took me a year.

How to Become an Online Jedi

So you’re probably wondering what does this story have to do with me?  Well, just like in Star Wars there is always a Padawan that trains with a Jedi Master.  The Padawan learns the ways of the force and then grows to become a Jedi themselves.  Eventually, they also become a Jedi Master and start taking on apprentices and the training gets passed down.

In Online Marketing it is no different.  Everybody learns from everybody and the knowledge and teachings get passed down.  In order to accelerate the pace of your results find a mentor that is getting the results that you desire.  Learn from them and you will avoid all the obstacles that they had experienced and it will propel you to the next level.

So I graduated from being an apprentice and have also started my own coaching program and have mentored people along the way.  You can also become a coach in your area of expertise.  It’s a very rewarding feeling to be able to help someone achieve their goals.

I remember one my mentees wanted to learn how to get ranked on Youtube and Google.  I showed him step-by-step and coached him along the way.  After a couple weeks his video and site was ranked and he was simply ecstatic.  I was very happy for him and it felt great that I could help him  on his online journey.
