Five major brands released new logos this month - but did they meet your expectations?

Via Tocquigny
Tocquigny's curator insight, May 1, 12:23 PM

As creatives we constantly strive to reinterpret the world in new and visually exciting ways. Yet we can also be conservative and often have a knee-jerk reaction to something new.

So on the day a new logo design is launched for a familiar brand, the first reactions are usually negative. Once some time has passed and the new design has been seen in action, though, it can be a different story. So here we take a look back at the month's biggest redesigns: with a bit of fresh perspective, what do you think of them now?

    Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, May 2, 1:17 PM
    Nick, yes the response to REAL TIME is a challenge all content marketers face. There is also an important role for "tent pole" content. I think of "tent pole content" as the old "evergreen content" idea. Tent poles are posts you link in frequently because they are strong statements of branded content and they've been supported with links, likes and shares. We don't manage more than 7 tent poles at any given time and they roughly support our content keyword and taxonomy silos. Once the machine is open full throttle life is fun :). Marty
    AdriM's curator insight, May 14, 12:33 PM

    Many clients resist content marketing. They think their product is for "everyone" and don't see the point of building personas. The more you know about the subject the easier it'll be for you to make your custumers gravitate toward it and finally be on board.

    Why Email Is Still Alive [Infographic] - SocialTimes

    This infographic shows how email marketing campaigns have benefitted from new technology and have also found a niche among media outlets and small business owners.

    Via gdecugis
    Susan Daniels's curator insight, May 9, 4:14 AM

    I've often said and posted pics on Facebook about my theory that email marketing is on the way out. My reasons are simply...social media messaging.

    This infographic shows how email marketing is taking a step up to a new level, comparable to the social media firehose. Content curation through tools like "Scoop.it" is how it is done. That makes sense. I just set up an RSS ezine on MailChimp. Is this Synchronicity or Cosmic Conscienceness? :)

    My own blog http://crazydreamersdo.com took a nose-dive a few months ago when I was creeping around in my Cpanel and WHM and somehow over-wrote my entire site with another template. The last time I did a full back up was in February. EWWWUUU!  I won't mention the vendor but they rightfully stated they had to charge me to go reinstall the back up. At the time, I didn't have the money.

    But, the story doesn't end there. I used Scoop.it since last fall (2012) and share it to multiple sites, including my Tumbler site. After about 1.5 months of stewing around about "what to do?", I decided to take the easy way out and import my Tumbler blog.

    Now, in a few short weeks, my site is back online and it took on a whole new look, direction and I think it happened for a reason.

    1. Starting with the words in my tag line "social media strategies, tools, tips and news" and then topics of my Scoop.it newsletters, I created my categories. Benefit: this gave a more defined direction that I had ever had before. It gave me a firm foundation from which to work.

    2. A fantastic WordPress PlugIn let me make multiple changes to tag words and categories so that saved a great deal of time. Here is the info:

       a. Mass Edit Terms for Categories, Tags on Posts, Pages or Media; and Simple Tags for new or old posts Version 2.2 | By Amaury BALMER | Visit WordPress.org and search for the plugin.

    3. With installation of a more user friendly "simpler" theme. The theme I had been using was too much for me (three menu options, etc.) Perhaps if I had staff, it would be fine, but I don't.

    4. I started using List.ly which has a plugin for WordPress as well. If you haven't used List.ly, try it - it's a great way to curate and easily post lists as blog posts, pages or on the sidebar. http://list.ly

    5. Currently, another plug-in has found it's way into my blog and I'm just trying it out. It is a multple RSS feed instrument that uses short codes. Here is the info:

       a. RSS Multi Importer, an all-in-one solution for importing & merging multiple feeds. Make blog posts or display on a page, excerpts w/ images, 8 templates, categorize and more. Version 2.64 | By Allen Weiss | Visit WordPress.org and search for the plugin.

    With my experience in using Scoop.it, I not only revived my blog quickly and easily...the Scoop.its go directly through to my Dream Catcher Ezine as an RSS email! What could be better?

    Whew! Long story short - using a curation tool like Scoop.it saved my proverbial skin. Thanks Scoop.it.

    Warmly,

    Susan Daniels

What is your take on it?
    Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, May 15, 12:09 PM
    Robin, first thanks for all the RT love today you ROCK. Now lets talk PPC. Can PPC play an important role inside of the Uof M? Maybe. If you have specific goals around list creation or have something to sell in a fairly immediate way PPC can provide an important dimension to the rest of the relationship building you do. Not sure how or what content you are monetizing, but I could see a "free UofM" study or white paper that would get my email into your list. Once there you could nurture those on your list with segmented drip campaigns. Clearly tagging those from PPC will give you the ability to judge ROI. Feel free to email your specific use case to me Martin.Smith(at)AtlanticBT.com and I will spend some time thinking about IF or HOW PPC might help. Least I can do for your sharing my content with your great tribe of followers :). Marty

    Via Tocquigny
    Tocquigny's curator insight, April 9, 2:51 PM

    Are you prepared for visual social media marketing? That’s the question posed by a recent editorial from the ClickZ blog. It is an important question for business owners to consider as they contemplate their own corporate social media marketing endeavors—and the ClickZ blog offers a few reasons why. According to the article:

    • The most shared and most clicked viewed links on Twitter are images.
    • The Facebook posts that get the most reads and interactions are images.
    • The blog posts that generate the most traffic are ones with—you guessed it— captivating images.

    All of this is to say nothing of the burgeoning popularity and import of image-based social networks like Instagram and Pinterest. The bottom line is that, when it comes to social media, images are increasingly dominant. For your corporate social media marketing efforts to succeed, then, it is vital that you optimize your content with compelling images.

    Easier said than done? Not necessarily. The ClickZ article offers three basic tips for how businesses can make their corporate social media marketing efforts more visual.

    How to Build an Online Community for Your Business | SEOmoz

    How to Build an Online Community for Your Business | SEOmoz | Market to real people | Scoop.it

    Excerpted from article by SEOmoz:
    " It's not that SEO is dead or that links are obsolete, or whatever all that crazy talk is that's been going around. It's that there's a way to integrate all the pieces into the big picture of building a better company by building an online community around it.

    There are lots of benefits to building a community around your company, but if I had to choose a few, here are my top five:
    1. It will help you weather Google’s algorithms;
    2. It will add equity and value to your business;
    3. It will help you have purpose;
    4. It will help you stand out;
    5. It will put the focus on goals, not tools.

    Here is a super awesome infographic and the play-by-play breakdown of each step in the process.
    Whether you’re building a community from scratch, or you’re working to grow an existing one, you can use this process to get your community rolling or optimize and leverage what you already have.

    [Here are only main sections of article]:

    [1] Define your business objectives.
    So before you do that, think about this:
    1) What makes your company unique?
    2) Why do you care?
    3) What do you want to build?
    4) Who do you want to build it for?

    [2] Elect your team.
    Here’s a few tips for getting the right team in place so that you can start working toward achieving your goals:
    1) Understand the roles;
    2) Elect, don’t just assign;
    3) Work together as one, big, happy family;

    [3] Develop your strategy.
    Think about strategy in three pieces: the what, the when, and the how.
    1) The what: campaigns;
    2) The when: execution calendar;
    3) The how: ongoing efforts.

    [4] Empower your team.
    Do not skip this step.
    I repeat. This step is important.
    You can empower your team for success by addressing a few simple questions:
    1) Why are we doing this?
    2) How much work is involved?
    3) When will we see results?

    [5] Learn your industry.
    One of your number one priorities in marketing your business online is providing the best possible customer experience. And you can’t do that if you’re not learning continuously.

    [6] Create the value.
    Ok, now we’re getting to the real good stuff. Value is what your community is built upon, whether that’s “tangible” stuff like blog posts, videos, resources, and tools; or an approach, perspective, or virtue that is the basis for common ground.  Value that focuses on your customer and their experience is what attracts people to your business, your brand, and your community.
    Foundational content is the more static stuff on your website...
    The challenge with foundational content is to listen to your customer. Observe their needs, the things in life that they struggle with, and then communicate how your products or services address those things.
    Community building content is the stuff that’s more dynamic in nature and usually lives on your blog. It’s the content that is less about what you do and more about what you know.

    [7] Share the value.
    It works like this:
    80% of the time, share other people’s great stuff. But don’t just retweet it or hit the share button and place it on your feed. Read it. Internalize it. And then curate it. Tell people why it’s good. This helps you learn and also keeps the focus where it belongs: on the value that you're providing for the reader.
    20% of the time, share your own stuff, but make it remarkable. This is the community building stuff that we just talked about.

    [8] Build and foster growth.
    There are lots of things that you can do to foster and grow your community. Here’s just a few:
    1) Get in there;
    2) Embrace offline efforts;
    3) Acknowledge and show appreciation.

    [9] Measure and analyze (and communicate).
    Everything you do will include testing, feedback, measurement, analysis, adjustments, rinsing, and repeating. And then, you’ve got to communicate this data to your team (and/or your client).

    Keep these final things in mind:
    - This is about building a brand;
    - Stay grounded in your goals;
    - Don’t give up."
