Introduction to Remote Sensing 1 - YouTube

A gentle introduction to marine remote sensing.
Laura Wilson's insight:

Not as cool as Karen's videos, but this video does provide a nice introduction to remote sensing and some good comparisions between remote sensing and conventional marine sampling methods.

Mapping the Marine Environment at Regional Scales - YouTube

Laura Wilson's insight:

Lets be honest, I just want to play with one of these gliders. On a more serious note, I like that this video emphasises the need to combine remote sensing with more detailed field studies.

Tracking endangered leatherback sea turtles by satellite, key habitats identified

Tracking endangered leatherback sea turtles by satellite, key habitats identified | Marine Remote Sensing | Scoop.it
Amherst MA (SPX) Mar 25, 2014 -
A first-of-its-kind satellite tagging study of migrating New England leatherback turtles in the North Atlantic offers a greatly improved understanding of their seasonal high-use habitats, diving act
Laura Wilson's insight:

I know that tagging and satellite tracking is a reasonably common way to follow the movement of marine organisms. However, given that only small numbers of individuals (in this case 20) can be tracked, normally for monetary reasons, I am uncertain about how informative it really is from a population perspective.

The Future of Remote Sensing - Yi Chao - YouTube

Yi Chao, from Remote Sensing Solutions, Inc., discusses the future of remote sensing. This talk was part of the Satellites, Ocean Robots and the Marine Carbo...
Laura Wilson's insight:

This talk provides a very good discussion about some of the different remote sensing technologies available (mainly satellites), the sort of information they can provide, and the pros and cons of different platforms.

Mapping marine and terrestrial habitat in Ningaloo reef

Mapping marine and terrestrial habitat in Ningaloo reef | Marine Remote Sensing | Scoop.it
Laura Wilson's insight:

The main reason this is here is because I got really excited when I googled marine remote sensing and something about the area I am studying for my Phd came up. This is a short, easy to read pdf that provides a good overview of the features of coral reef habitats that can be analysed using remote sensing.

How to count polar bears? From space, of course

How to count polar bears? From space, of course | Marine Remote Sensing | Scoop.it
They look like tiny white specks on a mottled grey background.
They’re polar bears seen from space — using the newest tool in the kit for scientists to monitor Canada’s populations of the mighty Arctic predator.
“They really do stand out as a bright white dot against that dark grey landscape,” said Seth Stapleton, a University of Minnesota scientist pioneering the technique.
Laura Wilson's insight:

This isn't exactly marine remote sensing, but it does involve polar bears and space. You can't go wrong with that combination. Right?

Plus, it is a really awesome conservation application of remote sensing. (Now if only we could work out a way to stop the ice melting in the first place).
