Fisheries department seeks voluntary avoidance of areas in Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound

Fisheries department seeks voluntary avoidance of areas in Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound | Marine Protection | Scoop.it
The federal fisheries department is asking commercial fishermen to voluntarily avoid nine reefs in the Strait of Georgia while talks are underway to make the fishing closures official and help ensure protection of fragile glass sponges — possibly the “longest living animals” in the world. “Until these protection measures are finalized, DFO is requesting voluntary avoidance of these sponge reefs from all bottom contact fishing activities ... in the area,” the department states in a memo. Fisheries would include groundfish trawl and longline, shrimp trawl, and crab and prawn traps.
Brunella Battista's insight:

Mr. Roy Mulder has a beautiful video available about these incredible sponges. Read more about sponges here.

Acidic water blamed for West Coast scallop die-off

Acidic water blamed for West Coast scallop die-off | Marine Protection | Scoop.it
Ten million scallops that have died in the waters near Qualicum Beach due to rising ocean acidity are the latest victims in a series of marine die-offs that have plagued the West Coast for 10 years. Human-caused carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere are being absorbed by the ocean and may have pushed local waters through a “tipping point” of acidity beyond which shellfish cannot survive, according to Chris Harley, a marine ecologist at the University of B.C.
Brunella Battista's insight:

With all the cutbacks in Fed Science  , I am concerned about Future water quality of the Outer  Fraser River Estuary ! Hypoxia " oxygen depletion in the water column "  that seems to be gathering strength , just off shore of the Fraser River now  !  Many big rivers like the Mississippi , Rhine ,Nile ,Ganges. Niger,Brahmaputra and Irrawaddy etc. , yes all these  big rivers  have hypoxia dead zones , at or just of their mouths !  Who will be watching the Fraser's outer estuary and Salish Sea  , when we have no more Fed.  scientists looking for early warning signs of accelerating  Hypoxia in this B. C. river ? As Dr. Bert Brink said many years ago, the Fraser River will become hypoxic just like other big rivers all over the world all ready have , unless we do some thing about it   !  No govern. scientists means no monitoring at all , until it is too late for our wild salmon and ground fish ! The Iona Island Primary Waste Water plant must be upgraded to Secondary or Terciary Treatment before 2016 if our F. R.  salmon are to survive !    Terry Slack, CMEPS Director
