Narratology: "Anything you can do I can do better," says speculative literature to realism

Narratology: "Anything you can do I can do better," says speculative literature to realism | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it

JS: Why speculative fiction? What role does it play in your books? In the society?

BOTH: Fantastika (i.e speculative fiction) can do everything that a regular literature can do, plus a bit more. It has extra possibilities. They have to do with seeing life in a paradoxical light, juxtaposing the un-juxtaposable. It’s a possibility of the impossible. If literature is — doctor’s offices and hospitals, ambulances and maternity wards – and life without them is impossible, of course —then fantastika is a research lab. Yeah you can do without it, but where will the progress come from?

Sadie Forsythe's review of The Burned Tower

Sadie Forsythe's review of The Burned Tower | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it
This is the second piece I've read by Maryna Dyachenko and Serhiy Dyachenko. The first being Vita Nostra, which I loved (or I did once I'd sat on it long enough to figure out what the heck was going on). The Burned Tower didn't disappoint either. It's a creepy, modern folk tale using familiar mythical creatures to tell a thought provoking story of redemption and forgiveness.

There is a fairly lyrical quality to the writing that only has a tendency to fall apart on occasion. However, I strongly suspect this lies at the feet of the translator or is simply a failure of two languages to smoot...

Review of Vita Nostra (Метаморфозы #1), by Maryna & Sergey Dyachenko | Sadie Forsythe | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it

"Oh, this was a wonderful read—slow and meticulous, with a tendency to make my brain quiver, but wonderful all the same. There is just so much atmosphere to it. It’s easy to follow why Sasha does what she does, even though it should defy all logic. She’s also a really relatable character, even in such an alien environment. There were some interesting side characters, who all played important roles and the story kept me on the edge of my seat..."

Review: The Scar

Review: The Scar | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it
"The Scar was a very interesting and very unique in a way. The storytelling and the plot reminded me a little bit of Patricia A. McKillip but darker; there were some really disturbing moments in this novel that made me skim over the scenes a little bit but it does add that extra depth of danger and darkness to the story and to the main character’s plight."

'The Scar' by Sergey and Marina Dyachenko - Fantasy Review Barn

"Take a look at what the authors have done here.  A thoroughly unlikable character without being a complete psychopath.  Not an antihero, we are not supposed to like him.  Not a villain either, no cheap clichés are employed to make us hate him.  No murders, tortures, rapes, or cussing out of elderly in his path.  Instead we see a realistic bully, high on the praise he consistently gets, who’s ‘crime’ is seen as completely defensible by the laws he has grown up with."

Amazon.com: iMedicineman's review of The Scar

Amazon.com: iMedicineman's review of The Scar | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it
"When beginning to listen to this book, I was already engaged (but not engrossed) in listening to one and reading another literary work of fiction. I was becoming drained by the complexity and work that I had to put into both. The Scar's simplicity allowed me to just relax and enjoy one of the more remarkable books I have read/listened to. While simple in its parable-, morality play-like nature, it still had the depth and richness of quintessential Russian literature. The characters are richly and completely drawn. The plot is riveting, surprising and unpredictable to the end. The prose, perhaps owing to the translation by Elinor Huntington, is engrossing, lyrical and poetically beautiful..."

"An attempt to draw a comparison revealed that readers have likened Vita Nostra to the titles ranging from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter to Hermann Hesse’s The Glass Bead Game; with Chuck Palahniuk’s The Fight Club somewhere in the middle.

I turned to Vita Nostra’s English translator, Julia Meitov Hersey, and asked her to tell me more about the book."

"I read this cover to cover in an evening (which should tell you something, as any free time those days is generally against my better judgment): the book draws you in, and, especially in the last quarter or so, an accelerating build-up towards the placement exam that is meant to seal the students’ fate, is darn hard to put down."

Vita Nostra - Maryna Dyachenko, Serhiy Dyachenko, Julia Meitov Hersey - review - Amadan na Briona | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it

"In a very real sense — more real than most so-called "Young Adult" novels —Vita Nostra is a novel for young adults. It's about becoming an adult, and discovering truly hard tasks where failure actually has consequences, and doing so amidst the swirling temptations of song, dance, parties, alcohol and sex. It's about the confusion of not knowing what you're going to be when you grow up, of seeing yourself as a free-willed individual with choices lying ahead of you and then discovering that you are at the mercy of forces you cannot control or negotiate with. It's about trying not to lose the parent-child bond even when you are forced to let go."

Book Review: Vita Nostra, by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko

"I want you to read it (moreover, I want you to buy it — the ebook is only $2.99), because I want more of the Dyachenkos' work to be translated into English. But this is certainly a book that will not be to everyone's taste. If you like dark fantasy, I think you will like it. If you like Russian literature (and don't mind a fantastic element), you will definitely like it. But it's a very strange book, and it doesn't follow a standard Western fantasy arc. Things are described in vague, esoteric terms and the relevance and meaning is not always made clear to the reader, which forces you to swim in the same existential confusion afflicted upon the characters."

The Scar by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko

The Scar by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it

"It’s a complex story, told with a nod to fairy tales, yet a certain disregard for fantasy tradition too. There are some dark, supernatural elements and an unsolved mystery at the heart the novel. There’s some wonderful world-building that somehow feels both familiar and new. There’s also romance and plenty of swashbuckling action, but you’ll still close the covers feeling like you’ve read something of consequence. Highly recommended for Fantasy readers or those who like an adventure with a little bit of artistry behind it."

Inverarity is not a Scottish village - Book Review: The Scar, by Sergey and Marina Dyachenko

Inverarity is not a Scottish village - Book Review: The Scar, by Sergey and Marina Dyachenko | Marina and Sergey Dyachenko | Scoop.it

The best part of this book is the psychological depth. I casually referred to this as a "Dostoevskyan swords & sorcery" novel, but the main storyline plumbs both Egert and Toria's psyches; Egert as he must cope with a debilitating curse that has turned him into a shivering, cowering wretch, and Toria as she is confronted with the man Egert has become and must come to terms with the fact that he is and is not the same man who killed her fiance. This is a story of redemption, and a romance (!), but the two of them (especially Egert) have to earn every bit of it...
