Drug decriminalisation in Portugal: setting the record straight | Transform: Getting Drugs Under Control

Drug decriminalisation in Portugal: setting the record straight | Transform: Getting Drugs Under Control | Marijuana news | Scoop.it

The reality is that Portugal’s drug situation has improved significantly in several key areas. Most notably, HIV infections and drug-related deaths have decreased, while the dramatic rise in use feared by some has failed to materialise. However, such improvements are not solely the result of the decriminalisation policy; Portugal’s shift towards a more health-centred approach to drugs, as well as wider health and social policy changes, are equally, if not more, responsible for the positive changes observed. Drawing on the most up-to-date evidence, this briefing clarifies the extent of Portugal’s achievement, and debunks some of the erroneous claims made about the country’s innovative approach to drugs

Oregon clean air rules may spell trouble for marijuana clubs and cafes

Oregon clean air rules may spell trouble for marijuana clubs and cafes | Marijuana news | Scoop.it
Though Oregon's Indoor Clean Air Act was implemented in 2009, lawmakers this year expanded the law to prohibit the use of devices like vaporizer pens and e-cigarettes in public places and work places. Cannabis was also added to the law, which initially targeted only tobacco.
Sara Conrad's insight:

Reads as if some person went in and then reported it.

"to follow up on a complaint about a member of the public

       about smoking in the establishment."

Gee, the #Cannabis in the name wasn't enought of a clue? What did they think was going to be smoked? Cloves?

The World Famous Cannabis Cafe has been open and now all of a sudden, it has to close? That sucks.

Fighting consumption of cannabis is a losing battle. People are lighting up all the time all over and if it's not flower, it's vape pens.

We voted to regulate like alcohol. Give us a place to consume and leave us in peace.

Get ready for the one-day tax holiday on Colorado weed

Get ready for the one-day tax holiday on Colorado weed | Marijuana news | Scoop.it
Colorado's unusual tax law is forcing the state to suspend taxes on recreational marijuana for one day. But FYI, marijuana won't be completely tax-free on that special day next week. A regular 2.9 percent sales tax still applies, as do medical marijuana taxes and local pot taxes.
Sara Conrad's insight:

Get ready for your #Cannabis sales tax holiday #Colorado! That's right, on Wednesday, September 16 - ONE DAY ONLY - if you are over 21, you'll be saving about $20 off an ounce of #marijuana.

Sara Conrad's insight:

But why would you want to take a pharmacutical drug to get the same benefits that you can get from Cannabis - which is a naturally grown plant? Really? And as the other person that responded to this says, there are high CBD plants, low THC plants. This is just a ploy by pharma companies to make more money. "Unwanted side effects" of Cannabis, indeed. Nooooo! I'd rather mess up my liver, kidney, have back pains etc than use that nasty Cannabis, devil's weed stuff.

Marijuana Is Legal in Colorado, but Not on Google and Twitter

Marijuana Is Legal in Colorado, but Not on Google and Twitter | Marijuana news | Scoop.it
Pot is legal in Colorado but not on Google and Twitter. At least not yet. A million-dollar-a-day industry is budding out West, but marketers are trying to grapple with how to advertise the once illegal weed. Digital advertising giants like Google and Twitter aren’t open to sponsored search ads or tweets from small-business marijuana shops.
Sara Conrad's insight:

The "work-around" is to use words like organic, herbal blend, herbs, natural, etc. OR pay a company that is allowed to use Adsense with Google. Because, it's all about pay to play and if you can't, then you can't. Not mentioning any names because it's all there if you google it.

Cannabis, cannabis, marijuana, marijuana, weed, pot, call it what you want, it's legal in Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Oregon. Not going away but spreading across the world.

Sara Conrad's insight:

Report from Portugal regarding The Kosmicare Project.

No one wants to have a bad exerience with any substance, unfortunately it happens. Fortunately, Kosmicare is there.

"Kosmicare now consists of a team of 40 people (psychiatrists, therapists, psychologists, homeopaths, therapists, and volunteers) working at the festival site in a central area with tipis, yurts, and a seating area. It has a drug testing service nearby one of the music areas where festival attendees can learn about the substances they have used or are considering using. The service also provides public alerts if necessary. The project also works in collaboration with the festival’s in-house medical services (doctors, medics and nurses), with offsite health services (hospitals or health centers in the region) and security stewards."

Reports like this need to be shared and held up as examples of how to treat addiction and recreational drug use. I particularly like this quote from Artur Soares da Silva, "The idea of a drug-free society is an illusion that will never come true." - same thing I've heard Ethan Nadelmann say. Watch this TED talk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWfLwKH_Eko

The drug war has failed. We are wasting money. We can now say with data how Portugal is a success.

Seniors Are Seeking Out States Where Marijuana is Legal

Seniors Are Seeking Out States Where Marijuana is Legal | Marijuana news | Scoop.it
The top moving destination in 2014 was Oregon, which voted to legalize marijuana last November.
Sara Conrad's insight:

Addressing this because I am a "senior" and am badged to work in the industry. When I go into dispensaries to shop who do I see shopping? Women and men close to my age. Who is working at the dispensaries? Young people. I have yet to go into a dispensary and meet anyone my age working there.

Harborside Health Center in Oakland has the right idea. They have a "support group for seniors". I'd love to do this with a dispensary here in Colorado but even though I paid for my badge myself, I can't even get an interview.

I volunteered for Amendment 64, I've volunteered and helped out so many times and for so many different organizations and ..... nothing.

I do marketing, blogging, social media marketing, SEO, email marketing, photography, computer troubleshooting, etc, etc. I've grown and am growing Cannabis. I'm knowledgeable and customer service is a super skill. I can't change the fact I'm almost 57. What am I supposed to do? Roll over and say, yeh, you're right, I'm obsolete and can't do anything else besides work at Target or CVS. FUCK FUCK FUCK

I need a job. I need a job. I need a job.

Concern Grows Over Unregulated Pesticide Use Among Marijuana Growers

Concern Grows Over Unregulated Pesticide Use Among Marijuana Growers | Marijuana news | Scoop.it
Regulators in the 23 states where medical or recreational marijuana is allowed are having a tough time making sure pot buyers don't ingest harmful pesticides.
Sara Conrad's insight:

I know it is hard to grow inside and I can only imagine the money these businesses stand to lose if their crop dies or has to be destroyed. That being said, as a patient, I don't want to smoke or ingest anything on my Cannabis I'm being sold as "Organic". I swear I've had some oil that wasn't clean. Testing should be mandatory for medicinal marijuana. Do you want your friend who is using Cannabis as medicine for their cancer being a guinea pig to test safety? I don't.

One of my plants outside has bugs/aphids or little spiders or something gross, I saw them yesterday. Today I sprayed that one plant with SNS 217 Natural Ready to use Spider Mite Control. Would I want to smoke it? No, but I'd never use it on plants that were in bud.
