Can Repetitive Exercises Actually Feed the Creative Process?

In Sherri Scott’s first grade class, the daily “main lesson” pages students work on — essentially their handmade textbooks made up of words, numbers, and artwork — are copied straight from the old-fashioned blackboard, not created. And that’s the point.

“It’s what we do in Waldorf schools,” Scott says. “In the lower grades, those initial main lesson pages are copied as closely as possible, to allow practice and more practice with shading, perspective, accuracy, spatial awareness. All that practice copying turns into a keen eye and skilled hand when given free rein in the upper grades.”

Asha Kanwar (CoL) - OER: From Commitment to Action

Globally, there has been a great deal of discussion regarding the potential for open educational resources (OER) in higher education (HE) to increase access, reduce costs and enhance educational quality. This was evident during the World OER Congress organised jointly by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO in Paris, in June 2012. The outcome was the Paris OER Declaration, which makes ten recommendations relating to the need for advocacy, policy development, capacity-building and research. COL's interest and experience in OER cover all these aspects and go beyond HE to cover secondary education, teacher training and non-formal education. COL focuses on the importance of OER to promote and accelerate the achievement of internationally agreed goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals and the Education For All goals, wherein learning is seen as the key to development. This is inevitably leading us to pay closer attention to OER in the developing Commonwealth, and to the challenges of OER awareness, development, adaptation and reuse.

Mimi Ito - Statics: New Media and Its Superpowers: Learning, Post Pokemon

Mimi Ito - Statics: New Media and Its Superpowers: Learning, Post Pokemon | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

The headline assumes that parents and teachers are uptight or should be uptight about kids' online activity. That we think that new media like games, social networks sites, and text messaging are at best a necessary evil in today's day and age, and at worst a serious distraction from learning. It is assumed that good parents and educators, concerned parents and educators, will want to limit and restrict kids' online activity and that is their primary role in this space. I was constantly asked to offer up strategies for how to get kids off the computer so that they could engage in more serious pursuits, like homework, or healthier pursuits, like sports.

So my question is this: Why is it that we assume that kids' socializing and play is not connected to learning? And on the flip side, why do we assume that learning only happens when kids are engaged in schoolwork or other tasks that adults have set up for them?

Aprende a incluir audios en Prezi

Aprende a incluir audios en Prezi | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

I am really excited about Neuro-Cloud. I heard about it in a tweet from Creative Commons this morning and went to take a look. This is a textbook that is being created by a community of neuroscientists who first began the project as an open journal. It is free for anyone to use because they are using the CC-by license instead of traditional copyright. It is still a work in progress: they want to have a finished textbook by July of 2013.

How To Set Up A Large-Scale Live Webinar with YouTube Live and Google Hangouts | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

We’re trying something innovative with our new Art of Photography online class – as far as I know, we are the first to try this.

For the previous one, we used GoToWebinar, which had the downside of being expensive and a Limit of 1000 people.

Using a combination of unique steps, we can scale a paid webinar to well beyond 1,000 people (unlimited, in fact) and it’s totally free.

Inventámos a Matemática.

Formal vs informal education - Joi Ito's Web

Formal vs informal education - Joi Ito's Web | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

My sister Mimi and I are opposite in many ways. She was a straight A student and I was a solid B student. She seemed to be able to focus and get through her schoolwork easily where I struggled.

My sister ended up with her choice of any university she wanted to go to and ended up first at Harvard and then at Stanford and is now in the midst of an academic career.

I, on the other hand, was unable to get into any of my first choice universities and ended up dropping out after a few years. I was later convinced to go back to university again by a well known physicist I was working with and dropped out again after becoming disillusioned with formal education as well as my ability to pay attention and learn anything. (I also discovered the amazing community that was the Chicago nightlife scene of the late 80s.)
