6 Tips Teachers Should Be Able to Do on Google Docs ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

6 Tips Teachers Should Be Able to Do on Google Docs ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Following the Google Docs guides I have been posting here, I received several other tips to add to these guides. I know it is impossible for me to cover all the details of these web services but some of these  tips are really important and should not pass incognito. As I told you before, this blog is a fruit of a collaborative work between me and you and I do learn a lot from you as you do from me.

Wrong! Free computers don’t affect educational outcomes | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Makes you wonder how on earth earth such misguided studies can even be commissioned. Also makes you curious about who is really behind the funding of research that misleads readers into believing that poor kids don’t need the same tools their wealthier peers use for success.

Some kind of obvious points, that obviously still need to be made.

Very well crafted piece...clearly the study cited equated correlation with causality. Lisa makes some very good points.

The Ed Techie: If education were free, what would MOOCs be?

Here's a thought experiment, if there were no students fees and higher education were free, what would that do to MOOCs? I mean, obviously it'll never happen... oh, wait, Germany just abolished student fees.

Steven Verjans's curator insight, May 26, 2013 7:26 AM

On a global level, higher education policies appear to show two tendencies: more public funding leading to cheaper enrollment fees (Germany, Finland) vs. less public funding and higher tuition fees (UK, US, Netherlands). It is interesting to reflect on how these tendencies affect the future of MOOCs...

Free Technology for Teachers: The Dictionary of Numbers - Putting Numbers in Human Terms

Free Technology for Teachers: The Dictionary of Numbers - Putting Numbers in Human Terms | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Dictionary of Numbers is a neat Chrome extension that "translates" large numbers into terms that are easy to visualize. When you have the extension installed any time that you encounter a large number on the web you can highlight it and get a simple explanation of just how big that number is. For example, if you came across the number 238,900 you would quickly find out that that is the average distance in miles to the moon.

10 Great Tools to Integrate with your Google Docs ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Since Google officially changed Google Docs name to Google Drive and a number of updates have been introduced to improve its overall performance. One very recent update is an increase of cloud storage capacity to 15GB usable across Gmail, Drive, and Google Plus. It is quite obvious that Google is trying to outsmart its immediate competitor Dropbox and I think Google is successful in its strategy so far.

High IQ means intelligent information filtering
Science Omega
You have to be able to process relevant information quickly whilst suppressing or filtering out less relevant, distracting information.

"High IQ people do really well when the image is small, but they struggle even more than lower IQ individuals when the object is large and more background-like," explained Dr Tadin. "What this tells is with regards to motion perception is that the visual system of high IQ individuals is automatically biased to process smaller moving objects and to ignore background movement."

Ken Morrison's comment, May 24, 2013 9:02 PM
I will definitely be sharing this with students and reminding myself that part of mental performance is blocking things out. I like the computer analogy. A faster processor is great. Letting an older computer focus on one important task can perform much better than the fast comptuer running 13 applications.

The Web Is Your MOOC, and Portfolios To The Rescue | FunnyMonkey

The Web Is Your MOOC, and Portfolios To The Rescue | FunnyMonkey | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

I'm getting ready to head in to DrupalCon, where over the next few days I'll be talking education and open learning with anyone who is interested.

And as I'm heading in, I have MOOCs on the brain - not because I'm particularly a fan of MOOCs, but because of the tendency to take a great thing (in this case, information and interpersonal exchanges distributed broadly over the web) and reduce it into something that feels more manageable, but is ultimately something lesser (in this case, MOOC platforms). More on this later.

ICT in schools survey – many children not getting what they need; teachers need more training and support. | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Students and teachers in Europe are keen to "go digital", computer numbers have doubled since 2006 and most schools are now "connected", but use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and digital skill levels are very uneven. These skills and support for teachers to deliver them need a strong boost, according to a survey on the use of digital technologies in schools in Europe published by the Commission.

The 21st century skill students really lack. | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Most teachers t think that students today have a problem paying attention. They seem impatient, easily bored.

I’ve argued that I think it’s unlikely that they are incapable of paying attention, but rather that they are quick to deem things not worth the effort.
