Free Technology for Teachers: The Dictionary of Numbers - Putting Numbers in Human Terms | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Dictionary of Numbers is a neat Chrome extension that "translates" large numbers into terms that are easy to visualize. When you have the extension installed any time that you encounter a large number on the web you can highlight it and get a simple explanation of just how big that number is. For example, if you came across the number 238,900 you would quickly find out that that is the average distance in miles to the moon.

10 Great Tools to Integrate with your Google Docs ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

10 Great Tools to Integrate with your Google Docs ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Since Google officially changed Google Docs name to Google Drive and a number of updates have been introduced to improve its overall performance. One very recent update is an increase of cloud storage capacity to 15GB usable across Gmail, Drive, and Google Plus. It is quite obvious that Google is trying to outsmart its immediate competitor Dropbox and I think Google is successful in its strategy so far.

Half an Hour: The Great Rebranding

Half an Hour: The Great Rebranding | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

I was at the same conference of course and viewed it a bit differently. The attendees are self-selected from an audience consisting almost entirely of instructors (people outside this community were prohibited from attending). The presentations and discussion seemed to me to be repeated instances of "please please please let MOOCs be whatever they are so long as they don't touch the sacred role of instruction."

Jason R Levine's curator insight, May 11, 9:07 PM

"MOOCs were not designed to serve the missions of the elite colleges and universities. They were designed to undermine them, and make those missions obsolete. Yes there has been a great rebranding and co-option of the concept of the MOOC over the last couple of years. The near-instant response from the elites, almost unprecedented in my experience, is a recognition of the deeply subversive intent and design of the original MOOCs (which they would like very much to erase from history)."

How do Finnish kids excel without rote learning and standardized testing? - The Globe and Mail

How do Finnish kids excel without rote learning and standardized testing? - The Globe and Mail | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

One September morning in 2003, a group of engineers gathered for a marathon brainstorming session at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif. Their intent was ambitious; they wanted to dream up a new way to land spacecraft on Mars.

The meeting stretched to three days of scribbling options on whiteboards, and the solution they came to for landing the SUV-sized rover Curiosity was radical. When Curiosity was 10 kilometres above ground, a contraption they called a sky crane would detach. Then rocket engines would slow the crane to 3 kmh, so it almost hovered above ground as it gently lowered the rover on cables to the ground before flying off and crash landing a safe distance away.

The Web Is Your MOOC, and Portfolios To The Rescue | FunnyMonkey

The Web Is Your MOOC, and Portfolios To The Rescue | FunnyMonkey | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

I'm getting ready to head in to DrupalCon, where over the next few days I'll be talking education and open learning with anyone who is interested.

And as I'm heading in, I have MOOCs on the brain - not because I'm particularly a fan of MOOCs, but because of the tendency to take a great thing (in this case, information and interpersonal exchanges distributed broadly over the web) and reduce it into something that feels more manageable, but is ultimately something lesser (in this case, MOOC platforms). More on this later.

ICT in schools survey – many children not getting what they need; teachers need more training and support. | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Students and teachers in Europe are keen to "go digital", computer numbers have doubled since 2006 and most schools are now "connected", but use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) and digital skill levels are very uneven. These skills and support for teachers to deliver them need a strong boost, according to a survey on the use of digital technologies in schools in Europe published by the Commission.

The 21st century skill students really lack. | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

Most teachers t think that students today have a problem paying attention. They seem impatient, easily bored.

I’ve argued that I think it’s unlikely that they are incapable of paying attention, but rather that they are quick to deem things not worth the effort.

Teaching to the test fails students - JSOnline

Teaching to the test fails students - JSOnline | marked for sharing | Scoop.it

After 27 years of teaching Gerald Conti said it was time to call it quits, but this New York school teacher didn’t retire because he feels old, he said he was retiring because he said teaching is not the same.

Instead of teaching students about things such as the New Deal, legislators have failed teachers by focusing more on testing than on learning.

Conti, 62, posted his resignation letter on Facebook, along with a photo of Porky Pig saying “That’s All Folks!”

Helena Capela's insight:

Estamos também assim no nosso país.
