Trip Risk

, but

Philip Knight's insight:

This is a first of a kind for me. Visualising a route is normal and visualising traffic data along that route has also become increasingly normal. Trip Risk does something different. It visualises the risk of an accident along a route using open traffic accident statistics. You can see the accidents that have occurred along your route along with graphs for an extra breakdown and drop down menus that allow you to filter the data (only for Victoria State Australia). Very clever. I'm expecting to see this type of data vis. become popular. It reminds me of a trip I took to Scotland recently. We were repeatedly reminded to take care on a particular stretch of the A4. It was an accident prone stretch, but was it the most dangerous stretch we travelled? I don't know, I didn't have the data.

The Pleasant Places to Live

The Pleasant Places to Live | Maps | Scoop.it
Philip Knight's insight:

The maker of this map defines pleasant as nice weather. The map therefore shows average weather, but it is the look that caught my eye. It is the lower 48 made up of little blue circles. Hover over each cirlce for a pop up with more detailed info. Simple, easy on the eye, informative. I love it.

The Racial Dot Map

Philip Knight's insight:

One Dot Per Person for the Entire U.S. (zoom out to see Hawaii and Alaska). This map has been featured in many geo news outlets and won plenty of awards because it tells its story in an engaging and innovative way. Great cartography. Check out the green hue of the cotton belt, and the yellow outposts in the territory that used to be Mexican (pre. 1848).

DataShine: Census

DataShine: Census | Maps | Scoop.it
The Census 2011, mapped with context for England/Wales.
Philip Knight's insight:

This is a really nice way of presenting ONS data on an interactive map. It's easy to use and has lots of great indicators available. In addition they are not presenting the data using Lower Super Output Area boundaries. Instead they are showing the values for the LSOAs but they're blocking out most of the LSOA where there is no housing. The result looks something akin to Booth's poverty map colouring each building according to the score of the LSOA in which it resides. Better than using LSOA boundaries because large, often rural LSOAs, tend to draw the eye, when smaller urban LSOAs are equally significant.

My Neighbourhood (French)

Click here to edit the title

Philip Knight's insight:

This site is French, so I can't really understand it (as I don't speak French). But what I can see it does is two things. Show the features of your neighbourhood on a map, which is normal, but it also have a really interesting other feature which is to show the features closest to you as points on an abstract set of concentric rings with your location at the centre. This is new and interesting to me.

New London Development

New London Development showcases significant commercial and residential development across London. Available via the web and free iPad app.
Philip Knight's insight:

London’s live development directory has a map showing London’s property developments by type (under construction, planned etc.) and by sector (retail, office etc.). It also allows you to display some other useful layers: i.e. planning zones etc. and transport infrastructure. It is a project of NLA (New London Architecture). And, form the prominent display of logos, I’d say the funding comes from Estates Gazette, Deloitte and Mayor of London
