The Biggest Bank Heist Ever! - Charles Ferguson [YouTube]

The award winning documentary 'Inside Job' [2011 | US] by the veteran crusader, Charles Ferguson is the most insightful and illuminating amongst a number of such attempts that deal with the global financial crisis, which is wrecking lives and economies across the world to this day.

The reason is that it successfully challenges the myths and lies surrounding the root causes of the crisis and tells us exactly how and why it happened, in a simple and straightforward way that anyone can understand.

Meeting Pussy Riot - Henry Langston

Meeting Pussy Riot - Henry Langston | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Odds are you've heard of Pussy Riot. They're an anonymous feminist punk band with openly anti-Putin lyrics who refuse to play in normal venues and seek to bring down the Russian government. They formed last September after Putin announced he'd stand again for the presidency in March 2012—a scary prospect for many since poverty, terror attacks, corruption, and the loss of civil rights have been the hallmarks of his reign at the Kremlin.

Since their formation Pussy Riot have made headlines with a series of illegal guerilla performances that included playing "Revolt in Russia" on the symbolic Red Square in January 2012. Ultimately they were arrested under Russia's strict illegal protest laws, but at the time all eight bandmates were released to fight another day.

Unfortunately that day didn't last long. On February 21 the band staged a final high-profile performance at Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral, and were arrested for charges stemming from the show a few days later, just before the March 3 election that saw Putin's return to power.

This time not all of them were released: Two members, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhin are still in custody and have started a hunger strike, proclaiming they won't stop until they're returned to their children. Three of them are found guilty, and face up to two years in prison. Below is an interview I did with the band in the middle of February, days before their arrest.

Our Favorite Tools for Sketching - Leah Buley @UgLeah | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Why are sketches and drawing suddenly so prevalent? Well, for one, they can save a lot of time and mitigate the risk of building the wrong thing. But we're also finding that drawn elements magically invite people into the process and make ideas proliferate.

Whatever the reasons, sketching and drawing seem to be emerging as the next must-have skills for user experience professionals. If you've been wanting to beef up your sketching chops, this newsletter is for you. In it, I share my toolkit for sketching like a pro—even if you aren't one. Here's what's in my sketching toolkit, and how each of the tools helps me be a better user experience designer.

I Draw Pictures All Day - Alma Hoffmann

I Draw Pictures All Day - Alma Hoffmann | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

What does it mean to be a doodler, to draw pictures all day? Why do we doodle? Most of all, what does it mean to our work? It turns out that the simple act of scribbling on a page helps us think, remember and learn.

Even before a child can speak, they can draw pictures. It is part of their process of understanding what’s around them. They draw not just what they see, but how they view the world. The drawing or doodle of a child is not necessarily an attempt to reflect reality, but rather an attempt to communicate their understanding of it.

In 2009, I came across a book titled The Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam. Roam is a business strategist and founder of Digital Roam, a management-consulting firm that uses visual thinking to solve complex problems. He uses a simple approach to solving problems visually. Every idea is run through five basic questions to encourage engaged thinking and to ensure a meaningful meeting. The process takes the acronym SQVI^. S is for simple or elaborate, Q is for qualitative or quantitative, V is for vision or execution, I is for individual or comparison, and ^ is for change or status quo.

Roam says:“What if there was a way to more quickly look at problems, more intuitively understand them, more confidently address them, and more rapidly convey to others what we’ve discovered? What if there was a way to make business problem solving more efficient, more effective, and — as much as I hate to say it — perhaps even more fun? There is. It’s called visual thinking, and it’s what this book is all about: solving problems with pictures.”

Why this decade will be the most innovative in history - Vivek Wadhwa @Wadhwa

Why this decade will be the most innovative in history - Vivek Wadhwa @Wadhwa | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

A wide assortment of technologies are advancing at exponential rates and converging. They are enabling small teams to do what was once only possible for governments and large corporations. These exponential technologies will help us solve many of humanity’s grand challenges, including energy, education, water, food, and health.

We are innovating at an unprecedented rate. In this and the next decade, we will begin to make energy and food abundant, inexpensively purify and sanitize water from any source, cure disease, and educate the world’s masses. The best part: It isn’t governments that will lead this charge; it will be the world’s entrepreneurs.

But .. no guidelines have yet been developed for ethics in the exponential era. My worry: Will humanity evolve fast enough to fulfill its increasing responsibilities?

Inside Job - Trailer - Charles Ferguson [YouTube]

Charles Ferguson’s film – Inside Job – won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2011. It narrates the shocking conflicts of interest between the finance industry, politicians, academics and regulators, which eventually led to the trillion-dollar economic collapse of 2008, and today's crisis. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion (10 Tera Dollar), resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs.

Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, INSIDE JOB traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia. Narrated by Academy Award winner Matt Damon, INSIDE JOB was made on location in the United States, Iceland, England, France, Singapore, and China, by Academy Award winning filmmaker, Charles Ferguson.

Music in the making ... bij Giel.

Not For Sale: Fighting for a World Without Slavery - Maria Russo @MariaCultureist

Not For Sale: Fighting for a World Without Slavery - Maria Russo @MariaCultureist | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Fact: Every year, two million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade; 12.3 million adults and children are in forced labor, bonded labor and forced prostitution — 80 percent of all victims are women and girls.

Human trafficking, or the illegal trade of human beings for the purposes of reproductive slavery, commercial sexual exploitation, forced labor, or a modern-day form of slavery, is the second largest crime in the world today. Many people who become victims of trafficking are poor, and can be easy prey for traffickers who make false promises of prosperity to draw their victims in. These victims become trapped and are forced to live in abhorrent conditions as slaves.

We encourage you to join the fight against human trafficking by spreading awareness, or by giving to organizations, such as these ones that are working towards a world without slavery.
