The Internet of Things [Infograph] - @SteveLeibson | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Some time in 2008, the number of things connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on Earth. And those aren't just computers or smartphones, but everything, including wireless sensors on cattle so that the farmer gets a message when a cow is pregnant or sick. This infographic shows us how connected to the Internet everything in our lives is today -- and what the future holds.

6 Surprisingly Simple Ways to Change The World - Anabel Jensen

6 Surprisingly Simple Ways to Change The World - Anabel Jensen | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Anyone can change the world but few do so. At Synapse School, our Six Seconds lab school, it is our mission to create those who do, the change makers of our world. This guiding principle strikes at the heart of everything we do there and with the work of Six Seconds. I would like to share with you six basic tenets I think all change makers, young or old, need to have in order to make a real difference in this world. They aren’t ground-breaking or difficult, yet they are rare:

Key Concept #1: Only change yourself.

Key Concept #2: Don’t assume; ask.

Key Concept #3: Take risks.

Key Concept #4: Wait before deciding.

Key Concept #5: Know that hard work and character triumph over high-test scores.

Key Concept #6: Remember friends are more important for long life and happiness than any other element.

Why Story Matters - @Thaler Pekar

Why Story Matters - @Thaler Pekar | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

“Communication is more than a transmission or transference device—it is a way in which we connect with and realize our humanity.” In my work, I help people share their stories so listeners will find resonance and will share their own stories in return. This is how mutual communication helps advance humanity. The one thing I would like you to take away is that communication is more than transactional. Communication can be transformative.

Modern, effective communication is more than transactional. Communication can be transformative. Communication has to be about engagement.

Inspiring UI Wireframe Sketches - Gisele Muller @GisMullr | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Wireframes are the skeleton of an idea, and it is really interesting to observe how other people do their wireframes because we can get several ideas and insights for our own projects. There are many different approaches to wireframes, from detailing kinds of information you will display, to showing a range of functions available, or laying out the several scenarios you have in mind. Wireframes are a important step of the creating process. Here you'll find a few good examples of wireframe sketches that show you how other designers are developing their ideas.

Nuke the Net: How to Get the Mainstream Talking About the Dangers of SOPA - Alex Fitzpatrick

Nuke the Net: How to Get the Mainstream Talking About the Dangers of SOPA - Alex Fitzpatrick | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

SOPA is not the mainstream issue we may think it is, yet its passing would affect even casual Internet users. There's one way to bring it to the national stage: black out the biggest 3 sites on the web.

Facebook, Google and Wikipedia. You’re the Big Three in this fight. You’ve already publicly affirmed your opposition to SOPA. Now it’s time to really be a part of the fight.

Go dark. Shut down your sites. Leave a message about SOPA/PIPA, link out to more information and let people know what they can do to fight the bills.

Die man kost ruim 20.000 euro per jaar! Weg ermee.

Social Business Design [Infograph] - Mark Smiciklas @intersection1

Social Business Design [Infograph] - Mark Smiciklas @intersection1 | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

A Social Business is like a city. Build yours one neighbourhood at a time. Social business design – adopting the use of social technology, flattening corporate structure and shifting towards less siloed operational models – helps organizations achieve business objectives as the marketplace becomes more digitally connected.

Social business draws on trends in technology, work, and society. Companies should care about social business because they can improve business outcomes. The core principles touch on all areas of a business, whether for business-to-customer engagement, employee-to-employee collaboration, or supply chain optimization. Making social business work requires focus on a company’s culture, connections, content exchanges, and measurement and analytics.

A post recently published by Dave Gray really helps crystallize the idea of social business design. In The Connected Company Gray uses a series of “city” metaphors to clearly explain how a social business is a “complex, adaptive system.” His post inspired the following information design. My goal here is to present a visual interpretation of these ideas aimed at building high level understanding and prompting discussion.

Interactive infographic about the evolution of browsers and the web.

The web today is a growing universe of interlinked web pages and web apps, teeming with videos, photos, and interactive content. What the average user doesn't see is the interplay of web technologies and browsers that makes all this possible.

Over time web technologies have evolved to give web developers the ability to create new generations of useful and immersive web experiences. Today's web is a result of the ongoing efforts of an open web community that helps define these web technologies, like HTML5, CSS3 and WebGL and ensure that they're supported in all web browsers.

Are Our Transit Maps Tricking Us? - @JessicaGross

Are Our Transit Maps Tricking Us? - @JessicaGross | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Subway maps distort the reality on the ground for all kinds of reasons. In order to play to our cognitive capacities and honor basic rules, there’s no choice but to distort maps. The thing is, we humans are always using heuristics to make decisions, public transit choices included.

Everyone might know a map "works," but we don’t necessarily know how it's working on us. When we plan out a route, we consider tons of factors: distance, travel time, number of transfers, walking time, waiting time, direction, reliability, level of crowding, operating hours, cost, seat availability, aesthetics, and more. So what happens when we make decisions based on inaccurate maps?

In the end it might be attractive to distort the maps a little bit further, in order to change the User Experience and Behavior. It might be cheaper to change peoples brain than their so called reality  .. (p(re))framing their lives ..

What Successful People Do With The First Hour Of Their Work Day - @KevinPurdy

What Successful People Do With The First Hour Of Their Work Day - @KevinPurdy | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Remember when you used to have a period at the beginning of every day to think about your schedule, catch up with friends, maybe knock out a few tasks? It was called home room, and it went away after high school.

One smart, simple question on curated Q & A site Quora asked “How do the most successful people start their day?”. The most popular response came from a devotee of Tony Robbins, the self-help guru who pitched the power of mindful first-hour rituals long before we all had little computers next to our beds.

Robbins suggests setting up an “Hour of Power,” “30 Minutes to Thrive,” or at least “Fifteen Minutes to Fulfillment.” Part of it involves light exercise, part of it involves motivational incantations, but the most accessible piece involves 10 minutes of thinking of everything you’re grateful for: in yourself, among your family and friends, in your career, and the like. After that, visualize “everything you want in your life as if you had it today.”

How To Design Mental Models That Create a Superior User Experience - Leanne Byrom

How To Design Mental Models That Create a Superior User Experience - Leanne Byrom | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Designing something right requires that you completely understand what a person wants to get done. You need to understand how a person uses something if you’re going to get the design right for them. You also need to know the person’s goals and the procedures she/he follows to accomplish those goals.

Mental models give you a deep understanding of people’s motivations and thought processes along with the emotional and philosophical landscape in which they are operating.

Mental models guide the design of your solution and help you and your team make good user and business decisions by focusing your solution on what users actually need – based on the feedback they have already given you.

They can also act as a road map, ensuring continuity of vision and opportunity. A mental model consists of several sections, with groups within each section.

Nederland is een natie zonder normen - Ramsey Nasr | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

Nederland is normloos.

The Sex Scandal Technique: How to Achieve Any Goal, Instantly - Maneesh Sethi

The Sex Scandal Technique: How to Achieve Any Goal, Instantly - Maneesh Sethi | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

The shortest path to a goal is not by doing what everyone else is doing. It’s often by doing the EXACT opposite. When most people approach any goal, they do what everyone else does: Figure out a goal, write down milestones to achieve it, and slowly pursue the milestones. Unfortunately, everyone else is doing the same thing.

Instead, every successful goal I’ve achieved has followed what I call the Sex Scandal Technique: 1. Figure out your final goal; 2. Skip all of your worthless milestones–focus on kicking ass and hitting that goal, immediately.

For example, when most people decide to become famous, the often do what everyone else does: go to Hollywood, try to meet people, work on their script, etc. But Kim Kardashian found a faster way: sleep with someone famous, make a sex tape, get famous.

In the same way, you can approach your goals by looking at methods of beating the system. I’m going to show you two of my most successful hacks to achieve crazy goals.

In a city the size of London, 30 million meals are served. But where does all the food come from? Architect Carolyn Steel discusses the daily miracle of feeding a city, and shows how ancient food routes shaped the modern world.

Me, Myself, Us - NN

Me, Myself, Us - NN | Mapmakers | Scoop.it

What’s a man? Or, indeed, a woman? Biologically, the answer might seem obvious. A human being is an individual who has grown from a fertilised egg which contained genes from both father and mother.

A growing band of biologists, however, think this definition incomplete. They see people not just as individuals, but also as ecosystems. In their view, the descendant of the fertilised egg is merely one component of the system.

The others are trillions of bacteria, each equally an individual, which are found in a person’s gut, his mouth, his scalp, his skin and all of the crevices and orifices that subtend from his body’s surface.

A healthy adult human harbours some 100 trillion bacteria in his gut alone. That is ten times as many bacterial cells as he has cells descended from the sperm and egg of his parents. These bugs, moreover, are diverse.

Egg and sperm provide about 23,000 different genes. The microbiome, as the body’s commensal bacteria are collectively known, is reckoned to have around 3m. Admittedly, many of those millions are variations on common themes, but equally many are not, and even the number of those that are adds something to the body’s genetic mix.
