Seth, to see how close my school is to the path locate Santa Fe Avenue...just a bit south of 149th (Oklahoma City)/19th (Moore) you'll see Southmoore High School on the west side of Santa Fe.

This would be great to teach the power of tornadoes for Science!

François Arnal's curator insight, May 27, 2013 2:03 AM

Sparkmaps

Sparkmaps | Map UI Patterns | Scoop.it
This is my proposed definition of Sparkmaps: Sparkmaps are small graphics that are embedded in a sentence, table, or listing to enrich its content with spatial information. What do I mean by that?

Extent Driven Context

Extent Driven Context | Map UI Patterns | Scoop.it
Michael Gaigg's insight:
What?

A user wants to see points of interest within a given area as visually represented through the current map extent. Typically the available options (results) update when the user changes the map extent through panning or zooming.

Use when

Use to limit the options by binding them to a particular area of interest as depicted by map and its current extent and when geographical discovery can be anticipated, i.e. a user will use the map to navigate and expect the contextual content (search results, legend items, chart results, etc.) to update accordingly.

Meet in the Middle

Meet in the Middle | Map UI Patterns | Scoop.it
MeetWays.com finds the halfway point between 2 addresses and locates restaurants, coffee shops, sushi, or any other point of interest to help you plan your next meeting. Get fair driving directions to the meeting point from both addresses.
Michael Gaigg's insight:

The classic example of the meet in the middle pattern is MeetWays.com

Anti-Pattern: Empty Info Window

Anti-Pattern: Empty Info Window | Map UI Patterns | Scoop.it
Michael Gaigg's insight:
What?

A user clicks on the map and in return is presented with an Info Window that instead of showing useful details is either blank, empty or informs the user that no data is available.

Use when

If no data exists there is no reason to waste time having the user dismiss the fact that there is no data.

How?

Simply don’t show anything.
