No matter what the city, there is always competition to have the best event and draw the largest crowd. The main challenge is to get the word out about your event … and to help the potential audience see the value in attending your event instead of another. Although there is a lot to be said about old-school marketing – flyers, ads, newsletters – social media is an excellent resource for spreading the word: create an event page, choose a specific hashtag, and promote it regularly on social media. And that’s just for starters!

A good trade to consider: welding. I recently visited Pioneer Pipe in the Utica and Marcellus shale area of Ohio and learned that last year the company paid 60 of its welders more than $150,000 and two of its welders over $200,000. The owner, Dave Archer, said he has had to turn down orders because he can't find enough skilled welders.

Market demands and worker shortages ultimately create pressure on wages. This applies to any profession with a set of highly specialized skills. Heavy equipment operators have also seen significant wage shifts.
