The Superjet: Engineers at GE Aviation Are Building the Ultimate Jet Engine | GE Reports

The Superjet: Engineers at GE Aviation Are Building the Ultimate Jet Engine | GE Reports | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

Jet engines, like people, come in many shapes and sizes. There are sleek and narrow engines called turbojets that generate enormous thrust. Used almost exclusively by the military, they can fly a fighter jet faster than twice the speed of sound, but they also burn a lot of fuel. Engines from another big group, called high-bypass turbofans, are bulkier, slower, but much more fuel efficient. Everybody knows these engines. They are the heavy lifters of commercial aviation that hang from the wings of most passenger and cargo aircraft. They use a large fan at the front of the engine that pulls the plane forward like a powerful propeller.

The Leader’s Role as Coach [Lessons from the Road] — Jamie Flinchbaugh

The Leader’s Role as Coach [Lessons from the Road] — Jamie Flinchbaugh | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

Here are some specific opportunities to improve our daily coaching efforts.

1. Coach method versus solution. When someone comes to you describing a problem, what are you doing besides listening? Most likely, you are thinking of the answer. Now that you have an answer and start to coach, you might try to steer, or “coach,” the other person toward his or her answer. Not only is it natural, it feels rewarding because the other person accepts your brilliant answer.....

“The Atlantic” Story of American Manufacturing Renaissance? Think Again | The Innovation Files | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

The cover story of this month’s The Atlantic is titled “Comeback: Why the Future of Industry is In America.” The lead article by Charles Fishman argues that the outsourcing wave is largely over and now U.S. companies, exemplified by GE’s appliance division doing more work in the U.S., are seeing the light and moving work back to the U.S. Given the decimation of U.S. manufacturing over the last decade, I sincerely hope Fishman is right.....

Will Apple Spark a U.S. Manufacturing Renaissance?

Will Apple Spark a U.S. Manufacturing Renaissance? | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

Sometimes, PR moves end up having bigger-than-anticipated effects. Just look at auto manufacturing in the South. Today the only American-made Mac is the kind you buy under Golden Arches and eat. America's other well-known Mac, Apple's Mac computer, is manufactured in China (like all other Apple products). That's about to change. Apple announced last week that it will invest $100 million to make Macs (through third parties) in the U.S. This move makes strategic sense for Apple and is potentially important for the U.S. economy longer term....

Can You Knit a Wind Turbine?: GE Wind Turbine Blades Made From Fabric Aim To Revolutionize Renewable Energy | GE Reports

Can You Knit a Wind Turbine?: GE Wind Turbine Blades Made From Fabric Aim To Revolutionize Renewable Energy | GE Reports | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

Contary to popular belief, taking a piano to a fourth-story walk up apartment in New York City may not be the toughest moving job. Consider the wind turbine. The stiff fiberglass blades of the largest turbines span half the length of a football field. Moving them from the factory to the wind farm requires custom cranes, oversize rigs, hours of careful route and traffic planning, and expert drivers to execute precarious turns. What if you could do away with all that and also eliminate the million-dollar molds used to make them for good measure?.......

Can reshoring really make a dent?

Can reshoring really make a dent? | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

Positive signs continue to come in for the American manufacturer. The trend of reshoring—bringing back manufacturing that had been offshored to, say, China—appears to be more than a flash in the pan. As I’ve written before, more and more domestic companies are opening their eyes to the real costs of overseas manufacturing. While the price of a product might be somewhat cheaper to make in Shanghai, other costs have to be considered......
