Sometimes, PR moves end up having bigger-than-anticipated effects. Just look at auto manufacturing in the South. Today the only American-made Mac is the kind you buy under Golden Arches and eat. America's other well-known Mac, Apple's Mac computer, is manufactured in China (like all other Apple products). That's about to change. Apple announced last week that it will invest $100 million to make Macs (through third parties) in the U.S. This move makes strategic sense for Apple and is potentially important for the U.S. economy longer term....

Manufacturing in the United States is expected to grow in 2013, according to a new report from the Institute for Supply Management.

ISM’s Semiannual Economic Forecast, released Tuesday, shows the nation’s purchasing and supply management executives expect manufacturing revenue to increase 4.6 percent and capital expenditures to increase 7.6 percent.

More than 60 percent of survey respondents expect revenues to be greater in 2013 than in 2012.

Jet engines, like people, come in many shapes and sizes. There are sleek and narrow engines called turbojets that generate enormous thrust. Used almost exclusively by the military, they can fly a fighter jet faster than twice the speed of sound, but they also burn a lot of fuel. Engines from another big group, called high-bypass turbofans, are bulkier, slower, but much more fuel efficient. Everybody knows these engines. They are the heavy lifters of commercial aviation that hang from the wings of most passenger and cargo aircraft. They use a large fan at the front of the engine that pulls the plane forward like a powerful propeller.

Raising enrollment in science, technology, engineering, and math courses may seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be.  This year a report issued by the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, on which we serve, concluded that if the United States is to maintain its historic pre-eminence in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—and gain the social, economic, and national-security benefits that come with such pre-eminence, then we must produce approximately one million more workers in those fields over the next decade than we are on track now to turn out. Higher Education officials and Business leaders gathered for a forum today on how to increase the number of New Hampshire STEM graduates – that’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. But while it was Community Colleges and Universities talking about the issue today, the lack of interest in STEM is a problem at every level of the American education system.

Tuesday's STEM forum featured appearances by Governor Lynch, and governor-elect Maggie Hassan. But the real meat of the event came from business owners and education reform experts who implored the higher-Ed community to do more to produce more talented science grads.
