Taking Care of Business: GE Support, Funding and Billions in Orders Help Grow Small and Mid-Size Companies | GE Reports | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

When the economy took a hit five years ago, Randy Bentley added a second shift. Bentley is a vice president at Numerical Precision Inc., a machining business that employs some 80 workers in Crosby, Texas, just outside of Houston. Numerical may be a small business but it makes big things like wellhead componenents for GE’s Oil & Gas unit, its largest customer. “We’ve been running two 12-hour shifts close to five years now with no slowdown in sight,” Bentley says. Today he is shopping for quotes to build a new 25,000 square foot plant to add machine capacity, and a new 5,000 square foot office. “I’ve always felt that we had a very loyal relationship with GE, especially with the guys down here in Houston. They’ve always taken care of us in downtimes.”

It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s a Washing Machine: Aerospace Physics Helps Dispense Detergent In New GE Washer So You Don’t Have To | GE Reports | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

Who doesn’t love chores that can be done at the push of a button? Take laundry. The TV infomercial pitchman William “Billy” Mays Jr. used to ask his late night audience whether they were “on the ball?” He was selling a “patented” long-lasting detergent dispenser the size of a softball that users placed inside their washers. “Just toss and go,” Mays urged his viewers. “Get on the ball and you’ll never have to pour and measure detergent again.”  read more...

The Real Cost Of That Pool Toy | Blogs | Manufacturing.net | Manufacturing In the USA Today | Scoop.it

My cell phone rang. A simple question from a friend: “You’ve worked in China. Can you recommend a manufacturer to produce my patented pool toy?” Ordinarily, rattling off potential Chinese producers would have been easy. But, having just spent a week touring U.S. manufacturing facilities in Ohio, I dramatically altered my response. “Have you considered a US-based producer? Why not keep the job in America?” My friend was surprised: “Really? I hadn’t thought of that.” And, therein lies the root of the problem.  Read more....
