Manufacturing leaders in the United States are fighting to resurrect the image of manufacturing as a viable career for high school and college graduates. It appears that China now faces a similar challenge. A recent report in the People’s Daily Online, a Chinese newspaper, begins with this observation: China's young generation are losing interest in entering the manufacturing industry, a trend further hampering prospects for economic growth as a labor force shortage looms large.”

Positive signs continue to come in for the American manufacturer. The trend of reshoring—bringing back manufacturing that had been offshored to, say, China—appears to be more than a flash in the pan. As I’ve written before, more and more domestic companies are opening their eyes to the real costs of overseas manufacturing. While the price of a product might be somewhat cheaper to make in Shanghai, other costs have to be considered......
