Manufacturing leaders in the United States are fighting to resurrect the image of manufacturing as a viable career for high school and college graduates. It appears that China now faces a similar challenge. A recent report in the People’s Daily Online, a Chinese newspaper, begins with this observation: China's young generation are losing interest in entering the manufacturing industry, a trend further hampering prospects for economic growth as a labor force shortage looms large.”

General Electric’s Jack Welch famously said in the 1980s that the continued competitiveness of American industry hinged around manufacturers having to decide whether to “automate, emigrate or evaporate”.

My cell phone rang. A simple question from a friend: “You’ve worked in China. Can you recommend a manufacturer to produce my patented pool toy?” Ordinarily, rattling off potential Chinese producers would have been easy. But, having just spent a week touring U.S. manufacturing facilities in Ohio, I dramatically altered my response. “Have you considered a US-based producer? ROBOTICS will be a major driver for global job creation over the next five years. The announcement is based on a study conducted by the market research firm, Metra Martech, "Positive Impact of Industrial Robots on Employment". One million industrial robots currently in operation have been directly responsible for the creation of close to three million jobs, the study concluded. A growth in robot use over the next five years will result in the creation of one million high quality jobs around the world. Robots will help to create jobs in some of the most critical industries of this century: consumer electronics, food, solar & wind power, and advanced battery manufacturing to name just a few.
